Title: rocker cover oil leak
Post by: bigup316 on 29 March 2008, 17:55:54
i changed rocker cover gasket and after reading a few things on here i thing i have over tightened rocker bolts way to much now i have a major oil leak about a litre every 5 days.went to a garage and they said head gasket is now leaking under thermostat is this posable to do this much damage just from over tightening rocker.does any one live close to oxford that could have a look i trust you guys a lot more than the garages.will it damage car driving it while losin this much oil.when it rains you can see all the drips of oil around the car park my drive looks a right mess so much for a cheap fix

I doubt the head gasket is leaking, it sounds like the cam covers aren't seating properly.

Loosen the bolts to what they should be...if that doesnt work then simply redo them and tighten correctly...VERY unlikely to have caused head gasket damage unless you ran the engine for a while with it heavily overheating...

agree it dont think it will be head gasket, , may be wise to check engine breathers :)

the big thick breather at back is blocked solid if i clean this out will it stop leak or if the damage has already been done will it still leak

If the breather is blocked, then the pressure has got to escape somewhere, usually through the cam covers.

when i had my v6 gaskets done i was asked by the dealers for the engine number,
i was told some engines also need the modified rocker covers to suit the modified new gaskets,
dont know if thats correct or even a problem of the 2L,
mine were ok...

Clean the breathers....................

This will stop the rocker cover pressurising, keep an eye on the gasket afterwards to see if it is leaking from there, if so you may have to replace t again. Get a genuine Vx gasket and o rings as they last a lot longer  :y
