I'm going back up to the Lake District at the end of end next week for a week for some R&R :)
Does anyone know of any "not to be missed" places of interest, things to do?
I'm planning on visiting the Laurel & Hardy museum & want to drive over the pass (what's it called?) that TheBoy & Timbuk did (& possibly others).
I'm hoping my knee will have recovered somewhat by then but don't think too much walking is on the cards :(
Cheers.

Wynose and Hardknot passes (on same road), near 'The Pikes' if you fancy a stroll :p
A boat trip across Windamere can be nice if its not too cold.
I find the lakes nice purely for the scenary - park up in some picnic area, and go for a nice stroll next to the lakes. Some of the nature trails are a nice stroll.
Sellafield not far away, apparently worth a trip - only time we went, we missed the bus to the actual station, so only got to see visitor centre.

Mrs. Grumpy originates from that part of the world, and we have our
own holiday place there, that we use when frequently visiting her
relations or taking long weekends.
If you want a place to stay try this:
http://www.booking.com/hotel/gb/keswickhotelkeswick.html?aid=303948;label=keswick-8grEEqvN8RNvBFBJHtFOrgS757818741;sid=b54000c777225b7cdd55134ce7ed9c4f
The food is also excellent if you just want a place for an evening meal.
Good food, good friendly staff, good service. Miss Grumpy often stays
there if we can't get up for any reason.
If you like cars, try this in the centre of Keswick.

If you can't walk very far, because of your knee. Park up in the large car park down
by the lakeside, and take tea and cakes in the tearooms that overlook the lake
on stepped terraces. Great view and you can take an easy stroll down by the lakeside
if you're up to it.
For a good drive, go towards Cockermouth from Keswick and take the road that uses
the Whinlatter Pass. Great driving route that climbs and twists over Whinlatter.
Part way up you'll come to a parking area that looks over Bassenthwaite lake. The view
in panoramic. It's like bringing an ordinance survey map to life. It's popular, but not
excessively so, so there is usually a Luchini's icecream van parked there. You haven't
lived until you've had a Luchini's ice cream. It's home made by Italians that have been
there for decades, to their own recipe. They are practically a national institution in that
part of the world. :)
On the way back from Cockermouth, well worth a stroll through, drive back as if you're
going to go back over Whinlatter, but go past the turn off and head for Buttermere.
Fabulous twisty drive that takes you through beautiful scenery, and then you can head back
to the South side of Keswick via Honister Pass, another drive that will involve you. ;)
Enjoy yourself.

I take it the Hardknott Fort is signposted :-/
I like the idea of Sellafield, I'll run it by SWMBO ::)

Yep. I've got a picture taken from there as my wallpaper as I type.
Eskdale and Ravenglass railway is a good ride if you like that sort of thing. It's a little narrow gauge steam railway which runs through some very nice scenery.
We stayed in Eskdale Green - which is on the railway and really well away from the tourists.

You'll find it on the map as Pooley Bridge - I was canoeing there just last week :) They operate a number of steamers to ferry you to Glenridding and back - nice and relaxing and a bar on board :y

Yes. It's a horse's field........and the white things in the foreground are called sheeps ;)

:)I love Cumbria. Did yet another of my trips to Millom today. Will be there again this week & never tire of the scenery. If my house was worth enough i'd move, but it's worth 90k+ so do'nt think i could afford it. :'(

:)If i thought i could i'd look into it. I know work can be scarce in some Cumbrian towns but with an HGV i can work anywhere.
Guess where i'm going tomorrow!!! :y

I was in the Lake District 20 years ago today. I was camping in a forest during the night of the 1987 hurricane. After finishing a bottle of very fine single malt whisky I didn't hear a thing although my mates said that it did get a bit windy during the night.
When we went to a pub for breakfast the next morning and saw the news on TV we were totally gobsmacked.
Luckily for us, Cumbria got off virtually unscathed. :o
