Title: Urgent thoughts PLEASE.

I've been losing coolant for a few weeks now, constantly having to top her up with a litre every day or so. Although I had the plugs changed 4 days ago, don't ask, she's been running fine  UNTIL TODAY.

She's now shuddering and stuttering like a mad cow, through all the gear ranges, from start. Once rollin' its not so bad...but stills accelerates with quite a bit of hesitation.

If I blip the trottle..theres a brief shudder/stutter before the revs pick BUT something is badly wrong.

Mr RAC man, who was basically useless, said that he was confident that both problems are related but didn't say in which way ??...

Any ideas before I fling her at the mechanic to try to fix for me.

1st coolant loss could be heater bypass valve 2nd plug a plug lead out and see if they are swimming in oil !! :y

My money goes on .. a leaking HBV that has leaked all over the DIS pack, which is now shorting all over the place .. :(

Solutions

1. Change the HBV - not expensive but a tad fiddly - see maintenance guides

2. Dry DIS pack as best as you can and pray - even harder to change than HBV and a lot more expensive !!!

3. drain and refill coolant system with correct amount of antifreeze, or you are just making future problems ... these engines MUST have 50:50 mixture ..

You could do with trying to narrow down the water leak, HBV being an obvious starting area and a paperclip test might be a good thing to see if it throws up any fault codes

The plugs appear to be fine..ONLY because the mechanic didn't mention anything was wrong when he changed the plugs last Friday.

did he even look down the plug hole to see if there was any oil????most don't . plug out. plug in thats it

Good point re plug change...The ONLY SLIGHT sign of any proposed coolant leak WAS at the back of the engine somewhere...only a trickle though.

I THINK I'm going to ask him to change the HBV and investigate the water leak more thougherly..

IS the DIS pack recoverable if its had a soaking ?

sometimes it can but mostly tend to be shot mate :(
