Cor, I feel like a stranger on my own forum! :-[
Work has been keeping me very very busy.
Anyway back to the matter in hand.
I want an LCD TV, and a good one.
My budget is ok and here are my options based on my research so far.
Note these are all "proper" HD with 1080p capability.
Sharp LC42XD1EA. Gets very good reviews, not a bad price.
Sony KDL40X2000U. Hey, it's an X series Bravia... need I say more
SONY KDL-40V3000. Can get this from Costco for around £1,000
Also there is another one... Marks DTM can you add the one you chose please mate? ;)
I would appreciate the input of others before parting with a 4 figure sum on a TV! :o
Thanks. :y

I just got a Samsung to replace the Dell I had for the last year. Turned up this morning. Very impressive.

Well somehow I would not expect you to have bought a Sony.... ;D
-
The Sony and Samsung use the same LCD panel made under a joint venture.....

I did seriously look at the Bravias, enough to do research. In true Sony style, they are knobbled. Some have fans (pillocks), some have no PC type input (bit short sighted), and many have a knobbled vga port that won't allow native resolution.
The Samsung I have only supports a few resolutions via VGA and DVI/HDMI port - see the pdf manual for details if it will affect you.

currys are selling a 50" with stand and home cinema for£ 999 ,forgot to say its a LG
-
Another one to add to the list... thanks Jaime... I think. ;)
-
I have to add that the Dell was pretty good, just a stupid digital tuner annoyance though. And blue LEDs.
-
Try the W series Sony - same panel as the X series (full 1080p)
-
So what is the difference between the W series and the X series...apart from a significant price difference! :-/

Styling, more powerful picture tweaking (if you are into that)
Try them out head to head and see if the X is worth the extra.
Looks like I may need to rush on with my 46W aquisition, as my TV tube has a small colour difference in top left corner when on white, very difficult to see but I'm a perfectionist.
Not noticable except at a high brightness back ground - if I can't service menu it out time to abuse my last surviving credit card.

I am VERY pleased with my Samsung......good price, excellent picture, reasonable sound (not a big issue anyway with my audio setup), good range of inputs, easy to use.....
-
at the mo i`m delivering and installing a hell of a load of samsung 40" lcds i`m must be doin at least 3full installs a day of these and i was told by a customer yesterday that he only paid £749 for his 50" lg plasma and that had £500 knocked off the original price..i dont rate the sonys or phillips as they seem to be breaking down quite regulary. i would personnally recommend the panasonic veiras or samsungs as these seem to be 2 of the best brands out there at the mo.. check out www.commtexx.com its an old work mate of mine and he seems to be able to do good prices on just about anything electrical...
-

Some very useful links and suggestions. Thanks guys. :)
Now.... what about plasma??
-
Plasma is a dying technology and offers little benefit over LCD any more.
LCD has caught up and indeed overtaken on the contrast issue, modern backlights allow it to match Plasma on the brightness side and generaly LCD's run cooler. The new LCD screens have dark levels on a par with plasma and generaly perform better under standard lit room conditions anyway.
My big issue with plasmas is I know to much about the drive circuitry.....its complex, VERY complex....the thought of millions of little high voltage switches trying to produce specific pre-charge, charge and dis-charage cycles on each pixel whilst driving what is basicaly a vac tube.....
Plasmas are heavier and consume more juice, also, producing Plasma screeens around the 40inch size that support 1080p resolution is quite challenging from a glass production perspective....
Hence for me.....its LCD, its a no-brainer....when you understand the detail.
-
Interesting argument... :)
Wish it bl**dy wasn't! ;)
Decisions decisions....
-
Plasma burning and power consumption put me off!
Oh and it is the mother-in-laws TV - too small for me!!!! ;D

If I had to pick complaint, and I'm really scrapping the barrel, with the Samsung:
I shows up the poor quality of freeview (though it upscales better than any other set I've seen).
Manually selecting input source is a bit crap - I'd prefer it if it came up with menu which you could select from, rather than scrolling through available inputs.
Very minor points, as said, and I should add I haven't read the destructions, so turning on the digital enhancements may help, and the input source select is probably easier somehow....
I am utterly delighted with my Samsung :D

And if you pass my place and want to have a look at it, pop in for a cuppa...
