I started out on this very job this evening.
the easy way is to pay a boyshop to do it.
For the time being I've gone for:
-chip away at corroded metal to get back to good metal.
-sand back
-spray with a rust preventind primer
-filler where required just for a bit of smoothness
-primer
then paint and lacquer.
don't think it'll be a 100% finish because its silver which is a pita to colourmatch, but the car isn't 100% as it is and it'll still look better than rust!

cheers keith i dont suppose you know how much it would cost for a body shop to do?

Hi Flatmajor, if paying someone to do the job is your only option then its best to drive to a couple of local BODYSHOPS to get quotes (They need to see the car for a proper evaluation of whats needed) Get more than one quote. Bodywork repairs are very labour intensive so expect most of the quote to be labour. Maybe someone on here could help out. You should take a picture and post it up, you might get lucky. :y

When I had both wheelarches done about six weeks ago it came to £580. The labour was the worst bit. Fortunately it had all been caught before the wheelarch had been eaten away completely.
It's not perfect, but you'd only notice under very close inspection. At least it's taught me to clear away all the crap that accumulates on the lip of the wheelarch on a regular basis.

I'll post up some pics of my work in progress. It's not going to be a perfect finish as I say, but it'll be better than it is at the moment.
Ideally planning to combine it with the spraying of the plastic bump strips but I think thats going to be a bit more involved and I want to make sure I definately have the right silver first!!!

I had my facelift rear wheel arches done a couple of months ago. For a car thats supposed to be galvanised it was a site to see.
Anyway labour is what costs the most. The rust on my one had eaten some of the rear lip away, but didn't make it round the front where you can see it. I spent time and removed all the plastic splash guards and sill covers before I handed it to the bodyshop near me.
In all it cost £180. That was just the repair work to the arches and painting. Bodyshop manager told me to cut costs remove all the trim you can yourself. They charge you per hour for the work so I saved around 2 hours labour.

this is interesting to read; one of the many maintenance jobs i have lined up is to look at my wheel arch on the back passengers side. its just on the lip, not visible unless you look at the inner arch. i invested in some kurust, some of the sandpaper type-stuff (name escapes me) and will be getting some GM paint in the next week or two. hoping the sun will be out over the coming weekends. spoke to my local bodyshop and they had suggested using a hairdryer or something similar when stripped back to ensure that all moisture had been removed. in the bodyshop they bake the panel to make sure it's free of any moisture.

I've just re-done mine, no rust, prevention is better than cure.
I clean all the crap that collects under the lip, then apply liberal amounts of wax oil.
-
if i was to do this myself how much do you think it would cost for the materials?
-
Have been doing the rust around arches and top of door myself, body work repairs are labour intensive and can't afford it.#So am tackling it myself.
Used a wire wheel thingy to get down to bare metal, used Kurust to treat, filled ,sanded and then sprayed base and top coat.
Paint ,filler and rust treatment are pretty cheap,it is just time consuming.
Post b4 and after pic soon, just a bit more to do.

£580, bloody hell! :o You must love your car!?!
It all depends how much you want to spend on your motor. We had our Mk4 Astra G estate done, repainted entire rear quarters (they don't do the fuel cap though) and came to just £150. I think bodyshops are the option everytime, those guys are artists and have the ability to work miracles! I suppose we're quite lucky we have a local bodyshop who is superb. Did I mention the finish is near perfect!?!
If you do it yourself I don't think you'd EVER be happy with the finish and the time that it would take you, (+materials & a mild day!) when you could be doing other things, outweighs the couple of hundred quid it would cost to have it done. It's also a chance to have some other scuffs and scrapes tidied up as well. :y

For anyone who ever owned a Senator this wheel arch rust problem was a regular occurrence. I did this twice with 2 separate Senators inflicted in exactly the same place. To do it properly is not cheap I recon about £500 per side as you really need to replace the whole arch as this is where the problem usually starts. By the time you see it on the outside its really taken hold behind in the places you can’t see. This was a problem on the Senator because very quickly Vauxhall deleted replacement arches from their parts catalogue. I think the second time I did mine they were unavailable and the body shop used arches from a Ford Transit which they modified. I believe the Autobahnstormers also sold replacements they had manufactured. Thankfully the Omega is much better in this respect but not perfect. If you just take the visible rust off the outside and repaint the rust will be straight back in about 3 months. A lot of body shops frankly wont want the work as they don’t want the hassle of you returning in a few months with fresh bubbles. If the repair is not perfect it will return. They would rather just do insurance work replacing panels so your best bet is a place that does restorations (could recommend a great place in Sidcup Kent). You really need to do it properly (which is expensive) or just leave it as a brand heritage feature passed down from the legendary Vauxhall Victor. :D

Yep, I love the car to bits. Looking at the invoice labour was just over £300. I guess I could have cut the cost by removing all the trim and saving some money there, but SWMBO would have moaned that yet again the Omega was getting more attention than her and my 18 month old son!
Anyway, I put away a good few quid every month for the Omega, so when the service/tax/MOT/insurance comes round I don't have to scrabble around for the cash to cover it.
