Title: Cam shaft upgrades for 2.5
Post by: amba on 13 April 2008, 13:07:01
Is it necessary to replace the cam shaft clamps from those matching the new shafts, when upgrading the camshafts on a 2.5 with those from a 3.0 ,or is it ok to use the existing ?Is there any other parts that should be exchanged other than all the obvious gaskets/seals with new.

Dont quote me, but I thought the camshaft shells should remain original from that head due to way they are manufactured

You only swap the cams.....the shells are line bore to the head and cant be replaced so must remain with the head they are manufactured with.

When taking the cams out I always flush the followers out.....

Seems odd when you see them come up on Fleabay they nearly always show pictures of clamps/shells,so really just waste of postage weight then .

I did contact a seller with regards to this thread, and had a snotty reply back telling me that i knew nothing about the build process and he had sold many sets of cams with the cam caps, and anyway was not bothered about any problems the buyer may have after fitting them. :o

Thats one seller i will steer well clear of.

Nasty things happen when you mix cam caps from different heads, as a mate of mine found out (camshaft ended up in 3 pieces while he was torquing up the caps). :o

Make sure they are refitted the same way round and in the same locations too (have a look where the markings are before you disassemble).

Thanks for advise ,guys.I will only change the camshafts and ditch the caps/shells supplied.Just as a incidental,is it only worth exchanging the "G",s or as I have the 4 from the 3.0lt should they just be all swopped ?

Cant see why you would need to change the A's...doesnt seem to make sense at all...I would just do the G's...

By the way anyone need a pair of G cams I have some, one a fully working and nicely running 98 3.0 v6 which I'm about to strip...£100 plus postage or can be collected...
