iv just got to the oil cooler can it be removed without slackening pipes
to the side of the block ?
is raining and i dont fancy getting underneath
thanks
-
well i have done a few oil coolers now and have not yet removed the cooler pipes from by the oil filter.... I know there are going to be a few people saying you shouldn't but i move the pipes just enough to remove the plate and oil cooler.
-
DO NOT BEND the oil cooler pipes!
Loosen them at the other end, which is next to the oil filter. You need a crows foot socket, but loosen them that end, then the oil cooler can come out
-
I ignored the advice not to bend pipes, and wish I hadn't. Even if you can get it back together, there is a good chance you'll get oil leak at bottom end of pipes.
Doesn't take long to do, much quicker tahn trying to bend pipes back
-
I arent saying either of you are wrong, but I have done a few now myself and haven't had any leaks yet by not undoing the pipes at the bottom..
-
ok undid pipes and oil cooler is out it was completely smothered in gooh, any tips to test for leaks in it.
thanks
-
Just get a new one mate £98ish :y
-
it would be nice to see the leak just to know
-
block one end of the oil cooler then and blow an air line through the other end :y
-
it would be nice to see the leak just to know
oil is in the water, you know!
-
Yep as said...you know from the symptoms you have...oil in the header tank is oil cooler failure...not really any other way it can get there...
-
thanks all for your help

Your all dam bodgers!
I to once did the same......ended up washing the engine over and re-fitting the pipes at the block end because in fiddling the pipes out the way it slackened the pipe to block unions reulting in a high pressure oil leak.
No point in cutting corners, the time saved on the cleaning, removal and re-fitting more than makes up for doing the job properly. Particularly as you need to remove the oil filter for an oil change anyway.

I ignored Mr DTM's advice myself 2 years ago. I really wish I hadn't. So don't bend the pipes!
It pains me to say (:P), but, as always, Mr DTM's advice was spot on.

You didn't do it properly then ;D
