Title: Halfords 150pc socket set... on offer
Post by: GastronomicKleptomaniac on 16 October 2007, 19:48:51
 Ey up

Went to the big H for a couple of bits, ended up spending £100 on the infamous socket set, £50 off at the moment. Well worth the money. :y

Might treat myself to another, seeing as half of mine went walkies at the Brackley Cambelt event  :'(

For those thinking of getting one, its worth getting a variety of 1/2 to 3/8 to 1/4 adapters...

Eh?

I meant the set is missing adapters between the different sizes, which makes some jobs awkward.

Really? I recall when we did your tractor autobox, you were only missing one socket?

Reminds me, I still have a mini torx rail that's yours...

Btw, it's James, not Maria :)

I dont rate it for serious use....but then you all know that.

In my opinion, you can get a smaller number (coz there is a lot of useless stuff in that kit) of better tools for the same money elsewhere.

In what way? If you mean the torx bits? then yes I agree, snap, snap, snap SNAP!  >:(

....and the spanners are to thin (dig into the hand)....its missing a few key sizes for working on the V6 (lerger spanners, sockets and torx).

The torx are like chocolate, its not realy upto doing head bolts in anger, and no adaptors.

You would also still need to add breaker bars and torque wrenches (essential on bolts in to aluminium)

Fair point on the spanners, I always have a rag on standby for undoing bolts with them - Thought it was just me!

About needing breaker bars and wrenches etc... You could also say, you need pliers screwdrivers and a hammer, couldnt you.
What tools do you use?

The nicest thing about it is the box. It's got 90% of the tools you're likely to need in a single box. Almost tempted to get one for the car boot, but it's a bit dear for that.  I've got all the tools but they're spread all over the show amongst several cars, tool boxes and the like. Takes me about 10 minutes to find anything. ::)

With that, you could get yourself mostly kitted out, bar a few important items, in one hit. Maybe that's worth 100 quid.

If you made a list of what you actually need and shopped around for it you could do better. I certainly wouldn't buy it at the non-discounted price :o

Of course you could .....what I am saying is thta you could get a better spread of more suitable tools for the rpice but, it would not be in such a convenient case.

I have an assortment of tools and makes ranging from some Halfords (the odd socket plus 1/2inch chain ratchet) through machine mart pro (who in my opinion have the best range of ratchets for the money) to SP and Sealey plus many others.

I got my Halfords set on offer, plus staff discount so £85 total. Which I though was reasonable!

I don't have a bad word to say about it... if you break anything get a new one hassle free. (as long as your not taking the p*ss)

Contrary to popular belief, everything is covered in the set - even ratchets if you kick up enough fuss.

I can't really see the need for Snap-On and the like prices unless you are really usng the tools hard every day. I have only broken 1 socket so far and mine does get a fair bit of use - and abuse!

I have yet to break anything in mine yet.  Its losing bits thats the issue.

Pros:
Convenient
Reasonably comprehensive
Lifetime warranty
Pretty good value on offer

Cons:
Spanners too thin - dig in hand
Really needs a selection of adapters in kit
Std sockets often not quite deep enough (and the deep ones too deep)

Yeah , I agree with your points there, some socket sizes I would expect to have a 1/2" drive but they are 3/8 inch drive which is frustrating as you have to then use an adapter - but if you have a tight gap, having an adapter on is like using a deep socket... it doesnt fit in the gaps!!

Other than that it is ace!
