Title: atf change
Post by: Richie London on 22 April 2008, 10:25:47
my trade card has arrived from autobahnstormers.  so as its nice and warm today im off to change the gearbox gaskets and filters. and put new fluid in. must remember to get a new drain plug as the other one is knackered.

2 gaskets
2 filters
fluid  5litres.  is that enough.

it says in haynes  from dry 8.4 litres but changing sump only 4.4. if this is the case will i not be mixing old fluid with new fluid. can someone please advise quickly as its sunny now and who knows, it could be snowing later lol

Yes, you only change about 1/2 the fluid each time ... :)  I think its a tad more if you do BOTH sumps and there is only 1 filter AFAIK ....

There is also a stupid copper washer for the filler plug .. the one I always seem to lose ... :(

When I did mine, used about 7 litres of fluid.

Where are you getting the gaskets?  if Vauxhall think they are very expensive, see Dave Kembers ad at the back of your straight six news for cheap gaskets and filter  :y

Opie oils are a good source of new ATF - Fuchs Titan 4000 is good  :y

I got my gaskets/filter from jpat

http://www.jpat.co.uk

Good price and excellent service :)

Yep, jpat or Dave Kembers for the gaskets and filter (the filter can be cleaned quite succesfully though) and opie oils for the ATF (Fuchs Titan 4000 which is very good and well priced).

Sadly, Vx for the sump plug!

Haynes cover the change pretty reasonably.

You will need 7-8 litres of fluid if doing both sumps (which makes sense).
Vx are not too bad for the gaskets.  I cleaned the filter (there is only one of them) successfully - saves 15-20 quid.

I think the filter from Vx is the expensive bit - but almost certainly you will be able to clean the old one.

The ABS guys should be able to advise you about the card.  Be persistent becuase it should be accepted.

richie i hear your pain man, I got my trade club card from abs as well, my local vx dealer started taking the pis* when I handed it over to him. Ask to speak to the person who deals with trade club or go straight to the boss and start talking about poor service.....

word of advice - make sure there's customers in the showroom before you go caveman on them :y

i rang jim williams trade club manager at vaux head office, he was going to sort it out and get back to me, that was at 2pm today. rang dave kember, left message too. turned the ignition key earlier and it came up auto gearbox on screen, but just the once. this is urgent now so will ring again in mnorning. probably rather rain tomorrow now lol

by the way filter is 58 quid at vaux

May i hijack the thread a second,

What would be the benefit of changing the ATF in my auto if it hasnt been done in 12 years?

Will i notice anything smoother?

End of Hijack/

Carrying on the hijack .. :)

My reasons for doing the partial change/filter change are quite simple ....

Although VX say the box is filled for life, the ATF acts as a lubricant, it collects any dirt/wear particles, it is subject to quite severe temperature changes, and it is never "checked"

As I believe that oil changes are the best "maintenance" an engine can ever get.. the same logic applies to the gearbox .. a little "preventative maintenance" now may ... just may ...  give it a longer and "happier" life. I also don't know what previous owners have done with the car.

For the overall cost I think it's worth it, so it gets done around 75,000 miles

end of hijack continuance

Well I noticed the difference on my 5 year old car with 63K on it, the gearchanges were far smoother.  :y

good enough for me :)

full change or just 5 litres from main sump?
Title: Re: atf change
Post by: VXL V6 on 23 April 2008, 23:27:43
Very hard to change much more than 6L at a time without disconnecting the cooler and flushing it seperately.

Will probably change it again in about a year and use Fuchs 4000 as recomended here.

Post by: Entwood on 23 April 2008, 23:27:49
I think if you drop BOTH sumps you can change about 7 litres ...  :)

and someone some while back was on about using an airline to blow through the oil cooler lines to get out a few more litres - I won't be trying THAT trick !!  :)

just a quickie. my kit has arrived. after ive changed the gaskets and filter how much fluid do i put back in before i start the engine up to put the remaining fluid in. ive got a hose so can pour it in from top of engine. and do i need to go for a drive then re check the level after ive had a drive

Fill till it flows out level plug,
Select all gears for a few seconds with car stationary
Refil again, with engine running till it flows out the level plug.

Secure plug, go for a drive,

Then recheck level, again on the flat with engine running, top up each time till fluid escapes.

As Above^^^^^^^

But when the engine is running i also go throught the gears too!

Make sure you have a spill pot under the sump when your filling up as it over flows quite quick and you dont want oil every where! :)
