I have only seen them fail due to owners never changing the oil!

There have been some cases of pump failure, but it seems to be to the v6 2.6 engines, and then only if the oil has not been changed regular. Jay w is in the process of fitting a replacment lump to a 2.6 that had pump failure, and i have seen the pics of a destroyed piston and rod.WHAT A MESS. ::)

I have only heard of one fail, but that was on a 4pot facelift with about 220k miles on it.....it failed at 70mph on the m4....bye bye engine!
