Title: Droplink noise?
Post by: macca on 01 May 2008, 14:22:53
I've started to notice a loose knocking sound from wheel arch area. I'm suspecting worn droplinks. Is there anyway of checking them before I go ahead and get some new links fitted? :-?
BTW: Doesnt seem to have any effect on steering or handling but then I hardly thrash about in it anyway. :P
cheers
mark

Its more of a light knock which tends to dissapear/lessen when cornering.....when bad you can get them to knock by bouncing the relevant corner of the car.

Droplinks start to knock through wear long before it's easy to detect any real movement in them. They're cheap enough to replace, and although pattern ones are allegedly not as good as original, I use them
and get enough wear from them to make it worthwhile.
It's not particularly an urgent safety issue, but getting rid of the annoyance is magic. Takes about 20/30 mins per side, (except for the whizz-kids), given no snags removing bolts.

Quick, free way to check     remove them and  take a short, careful drive.

Its an excellent price, the Vx ones are much more even on trade club prices and are not a lot better!

thanks mark, just bought a pair  :D.
At that price its worth changing them even if its just to eliminate them as the problem.

Knocking - jack it up, look for suspension play (wishbone bushes, ball joints, upper shock bearing etc), if none found, change droplinks...

Have had a knocking from mine over the last few months, but not really used the car that much. Managed to get under it yesterday whilst it was up on ramps.

Drivers side droplink is solid not even moving up or down, passenger side has, at a guess, about 2mm of movement in it. Just going to order a pair of droplinks and a driver side wishbone and then all of the front suspension has been replaced in the last 2 years (Shock leaking on one side front and back, spring on oppositre side front for MOT)

The links  I ordered turned up on Tuesday were fitted yesterday, the old ones actually seemed in pretty good condition though  :-? which surpirsed me as a local vx dealer did a free check on the car back in september and had advised one was worn  ::) . Any way they have both been changed and  I did notice a reduction in the clunking  :) but  I think the wishbone bushes are starting to go although they were not an issue in March when the car was MOT'D
