Title: diagnostic code p0730 causing hell. please help
Post by: Northstar on 08 May 2008, 12:23:07
Hello all.
My parents are having trouble with their Omega, and im hoping someone can offer advice.
The Omega in question is a 2001 3.2 v6 elite auto estate.
Basically whats happening is, your driving along in a normal driving manner, and then for some reason 'bang'. Its like youve just gone down a massive pothole as the engine seems to almost stop for a second, then goes into limp mode. The symbol of the car with a spanner comes on the dash too..... If you pull over and stop it goes away and drives normally. This can happen every 200 miles or 500miles or so, and it can be at any speed etc. its the same every time, bar one time when it seemed to take the car out of gear while driving and started to raise the engine revs. Thats only happened once, and that was at low speed.....
Heres the fun bit. Took it to Vauxhall for a diagnostic to reveal these codes. p0500 p1700 p0650 p1650. Got those cleared and waited for it to happen again. next test revealed p0500 p1700 a new crank angle sensor was fitted. It happened again ofcourse so went back to show p1700. I have no idea what theses codes refer to so if someone does can they tell me please. We took it somewhere else and they didnt find anything wrong. It happened a few times after this so decided to go back for a diagnostic. code p0730 came up and we were told that this wasnt a recognised vauxhall code which seemed very unlikely to me..... The garage have been driving it for three weeks now waiting for the fault to happen, but it hasnt yet..... please can anyone help??

That code doesn't exist - according to top buzz at least.  Someone mentioned recently that the codes can be read on the 3.2 by pressing the accelerator and the brake to the floor.  Keep them pressed down and then turn the ignition to position 2 (do not start the car).  With any luck the EML will flash and give you the code.  Won't cause any harm to try.  Need to get the right code before anyone can help.

Hi,
I don't know if this helps or muddies the water in your case, but I used to have a Renault Safrane 3.0 l Auto, and used to get absolutely the identical problem to what you decribe.(I even did 2500 miles once between happenings)

It took ages to sort out, but eventually found to be a faulty relay (sticking I think) on the auto transmission control causing two clutches to be engaged at same time that shouldn't have been able to happen in theory at least. Had to have an updated replacement relay box. very expensive.

I don't think the Omega auto box is controlled in the same way, but it may help you to start looking in right direction.

If you google the fault code P0730 it definitely relates to transmission problems as Roger mentioned.  I'd make sure p0730 definitely is the correct code being read though.

Thanks for all the replies.... Some good thoughts been brought up which im guna look into.....

However tried the brake pedal/ accelerator pedal test for the diagnostic and yes it worked.....

Flashed so fast it was like a strobe light. Had to do it three times just to be sure....

The symbol of the car and the spanner was the one that flashed and not the engine management light.... Is this correct? Was the car/spanner made the main warning light on the 3.2?? and not the engine symbol??

any how it flashed in this sequence.

1 then 7 then 10 then 10

Can anyone tell me what these numbers mean???
Many thanks.

Hi,
For info P0730 on my MaxScan GS500 comes out as "Gear Ratio Incorrect"

Don't know if this helps !!

Yes that's correct! The Engine Management lamp is the one with the 'spanner through the car', the Emissions lamp is the one with a picture of an engine..... Or at least that's how it is on my 3.2... Confusing the first time!

P1700 refers to a gearbox problem so the next step would be to read the gearbox with a Tech 2 to see what it's complaining about. However, you've had a scattering of codes complaining about vehicle speed signal and CAN bus problems so I would be inclined to check the ABS system too. Could be a faulty signal has caused the gearbox to miss a beat.

Also, basics like supply voltage, security of all connectors on the gearbox, ECUs, etc. are worth looking at IMHO.
