My 2.5TD starts on the button from cold - after letting the glow-plug warning light go out.
Once the engine's warmed-up, the glow-plug warning light doesn't show, and it's a pig to start.
Anyone able to point me in the right direction?
Thanks chaps.

My TD suffered from this a bit last summer, but once I fixed the lift pump I haven't noticed it all since... you have any luck with your pump yet?
-
Thanks Platty,
No I haven't had the time to tackle the in-tank pump yet.
However, this problem seems due to the glow-plug light not illuminating when the ignition is turned on - when the engine's warm.
Initial start-up from cold is 'on the button'.
Does your glow-plug light illuminate on a warm start-up?
See if you can let me know ...... cheers!

Lifterd from landy site.Re: p38 diesel auto hot start fix
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi Grant,
You Can restore it by removing all of the wiring that came with the kit and re joining the wire that runs from the temp sensor to the ECU
Also to Ultimez
The original fault seems to me to be down to the programming by BMW - the fault is common to all BMW 2.5 Diesel applications not just Range Rover but Vauxhall Omega too. BMW programme the system so that when the engine is warm it gets NO preheat NO timing advance and NO extra fuel to help it start. Once the engines "get on a bit" like all of us they need a little help to start that BMW do not give - all the fix does is tell the engine it is cold whilst the relay is energised and that it is at the sensed temperature once the relay is de energised. The reason that Chipping the engine works is that the chip bypassess most of BMW's programming and tells the Pump to deliver the fuel you request with the accelerator regardless of what the German engineers think is just enough - that little bit of help - and of course better power delivery at differing profiles - remember BMW did not want the P38 to out perform the X5 they were working on at the same time......
Hope this helps

There is a fix for sale on ebay somewhere for a couple of quid

Once warm, my glow plug light doesn't come on. It used to wind over and splutter a bit before it kicked in. Now it is on the button!

Same here, once warm glow-plug light should not show only when cold.
Don't know how long you have had your TD but when starting from hot or cold never blip the throttle, it will never start if you do that, well mine won't.

Thanks chaps,
I'll try out your ideas and report back - cheers!
