Title: Complete noobie missing. . . . . . something?
Post by: Cheshley on 26 April 2008, 15:31:41
Hello,

My mechanic pointed out to me yesterday that there appears to be a pipe missing from my engine!!!!!

On the underside of the round unit that attaches to the front of the intake manifold (technical terms, I don't know what that round unit is or what it does) there is an outlet that looks like it should have something connected to it.  Directly under this outlet there is a water hose which is now covered in what appears to be oil but I've never noticed this before.

Any suggestions?  Would a photo help? What effect would this missing connection have on my car?

Thanks

Most probably, yes. That is if it isn't too much trouble.

apparently I can't just download a pic, I have to host it on another site and post the link or something like that, or I may have got that completely wrong......  If a pic is needed, PM me your email and I'll send it.

well, it almost worked, click the link and hopefully you can see what I mean.  There's a black pipe with a blue stripe attached to one connection but the other connection has nothing on it and that's where the oil(?) is coming from.

You seem to be missing a vaccum for your EGR valve. I can have a look and see where mine goes if you like...

If I was you, (as per the other thread) I would take the whole lot off, including the EGR and give it a good old clean up. Mine was filthy inside and the EGR wasn't even moving. It doesn't take long and is well worth doing.

Clean up the Jubilees and get them nice and tight when re-fitting it all as some hoses clamp onto plastic pipes which is a bit crap.

Would be great if you would have a look and let me know what it should look like, thanks.  I've got plans to get the inlet manifold off and get the plugs changed (per other thread) and while the manifold is off I'm going to put a new temp sensor in because the temp dial on the dashboard hardly moves, so while it's in bits I may as well have a go at cleaning the insides up.  Any recommendations as to what to use?

My TD never gets above 90 degrees normally. I ran without the viscous fan for a fortnight and it used to sit around 95 degrees all the time. So, I have decided to run it with the fan in the summer and leave it off in the winter.

With regards to cleaning your pipes out (on the omega ;D) I used Gunk degreaser in a 1litre can - not the spray type, but the brush on - allows you to get into all the nooks and crannies with a half inch brush.

Soak it, clean it all, wipe dry and refit. Ill get that pic tonight if possible. :y

EGR vac pipe falling off is common!!! if your mechanic was any good he would have seen it hanging down, it wont affect the engine running at all, but what it does do is allow gunk and crap to fall in your alternator eventually gumming it all up!!

The black blue pipe is egr vac.  I think the other is some kind of drain.  Mine fell off, never did anything.  I'm now using a different (older) egr without the extra pipe.

Stat is easy to change on TD. My tip, when you remove the viscous fan, leave it off.

Had a look on mine and I only have the 1 vacuum pipe coming off the EGR - not much use i'm afraid...

Got around to taking the EGR off at the weekend, the hoses didn't seem too mucky but the EGR valve was caked in crud and wasn't moving at all so a few minutes with a can of Gunk and a toothbrush and it looks like new.  Not been out in it since due to electrical problem (that's on another post) but I've dropped a new battery in it today and it's started for the first time in 5 days!!!!!  Didn't feel brave enough to take the intake manifold off (a little pushed for time) but that's on the list for this weekend tho now it's starting ok why bother changing the plugs anyway....................?   :y

Just looked at mine to check all is ok, and there is no pipe at all!

Have tried to find it, but nothing is obvious. Where should the other end of the pipe be??

This is where the blue/black pipe goes to from the EGR, not sure what the black module is that it goes into the bottom of.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the photo, only I don't seem to have the black box part!

I'll try and post a photo of mine up on here later.

The black box is a solenoid actuator which connects to the ECU.

It has a vac feed and an output to the EGR valve plus a small air fliter type assembly on a stub.
