Title: Smell of petrol
Post by: Nickbat on 19 May 2008, 12:47:11
For some time now, I've noticed a smell of petrol from the rear of the car. This ONLY occurs when the car is first started in the day; thereafter for the rest of the day there is no smell. I've inspected for corrosion under the plate in the boot, but found no signs. I can't see any obvious signs of physical leakeage around the fuel lines by the pump/filter.

Any ideas gratefully received!

Nick

I had this last summer. Thought it was a leaking fuel filter but that didn't cure it and there are certainly no leaks anywhere. :-/

I haven't noticed it for months. Be interesting if it comes back now the weather is warming up.

I once had this on a 1996 3.0 Elite, especially after filling up with fuel.

I put it down to the tank breathers, especially in hot weather, and never suffered any adverse situations. :y

The tank shouldn't be open to atmosphere. The only breather is via the charcoal canister which vents into the intake when the engine is running, hence all fumes from the tank are burnt rather than polluting the environment.

Yup

Right, thanks. :y

I just knew that when I changed tanks over on both a Carlton and Senator they had breather pipes that seemed to be open to the elements, but obviously I misunderstood where they went! ;D ;)

Can't remember when charcoal canisters came in but I believe it was around the time when cats came in (they need a lambda loop to compensate for the change in fuelling when the tank fumes are burnt) so it's possible that some Carltons / Senators didn't have them.

WEEPS!
You mean that the petrol is simply evaporating??

This is what Markey's talking about:

I did check mine and it seemed OK, but maybe I need to do a more thorough investigation.

The tank cover on mine is OK. I doused it in Waxoyl while I was there as they do corrode.
