Title: Oil Change advice (How much oil?)
Post by: Albatross on 31 May 2008, 16:18:50
I've read the advice on changing the oil in a V6, and this advises 5.75 litres of oil. The only point I wanted to check was is this the same amount of oil as for a 3.2 V6?

Perhaps it is just me being silly, but I figured a bigger V6 engine might need a bit more oil.

The sump plug is out and the filter is out, so if anyone has any advice whilst I'm drinking my drainage time coffee it would be greatly appreciated.

Nathan

Make sure the rubber O ring is on the sump plug and not in the waste oil container.
That's Tonygnome's favourite trick.  ;D ;D

Thanks for that, but I think I that as I have the newer sump plug (the round one with the torx fitting) there isn't a rubber ring.

Am I right, or should I start fishing around in the oil now? :-/

(Best panto voice) Oh yes there is.
Well there is on mine and mine's the torx type too, it fits in the little groove on the sump plug.

Have a look at the sealing face of the sump plug. If there's half round circle all the way around, like my 99 3.0 V6 then you need either a new one or you need to fish your old one out of the old oil. Not knowing specifically about 3.2's I'd suspect that yours will have the rubber 'O' ring.

edit ... Must type faster!

you should always replace the o-ring for the sake of a few pence lol
Unless you want a nice oil stain on your driveway ::)

'My' parts desk usually sticks the 'O' ring or copper washer in box with the filter FOC.

Sorted, found it still in the plug. It was in perfect nick. This was my 1st oil change since getting the car.

I changed the oil and air filter, judging by the state of them they had both been changed just before I got the car 3 months or so ago as the oil was still a lovely nice clear golden brown and the air filter was pretty clean.

Still I'm glad I've done them so that I have a good idea when they were all done last.

James V6CDX is going to be doing my cam-belt and helping me clean out the breather sytem very shortly.

Shocks are being changed at WIM on Tuesday and I'll get a couple of new tyres (265x30x19) for the rear as the front NS shock being on its way out has worn the trye on that corner pretty badly.

Then it is booked into Long-Life for a new cat-back exhaust system on the 28th of June.

I'll need to do the tranny oil in the next couple of months and then I'll be happy that most jobs have been done for a little while.

Earlier hex sump bolts use copper washers which should be renewed, later torx have rubber o ring which can be reused if ok.

shade over 5.5l for all v6
