Quick silly question. Just doing an oil and filter change myself for the first time (garages previously). The paper element has clips on one end. Do they go in towards the engine or clip over the boss on the inside of the metal filter cap?

The latter. You'll see when you take the old metal filter cap off.
I did mine for the 1st time last weekend. When you take the cap off the filter may well stay stuck to the engine. I tried pulling it off using pliers on the little clips. Don't waste you time, the clips will just pull off. The best way to remove the filter from this point is to use fingers.
Beware a lot of oil will come out as you do this, so keep the oil tray under it at all times.
Do the oil change once the engine is up to a good temperature as the oil will be thinner and drain out of the engine much better. The oil is hot so be warned.

Also, following a service at Vx, I needed to use a breakers bar with 24mm socket to loosen it... >:( I guess I was lucky that the cap came off and not the whole thing as happened to other members here. On re-tightening, make sure it is to 15NM only.....
Oh, and DO NOT insert a 3/8" drive into the square at the middle, you MUST use a 24mm socket or ring spanner....

Never had a problem using a 3/8th drive on mine. :-/

Then again if you want to do away with that type of filter then you could do the mod and change to the canister type. There is a how to on here some where. Take alook at it and decide if you want to do it. Just a thought.

How so? You're not going to get the torque correct with a ring spanner?
I've always just popped the small torquewrench straight onto the 3/8 socket, what's the negative effects of this?

Spanner for taking it off and starting it back on. As James says, the square hole is for nipping it up to the correct torque with a 3/8 torque wrench.
Do not try to remove it with force using the square 3/8 hole though; use the spanner.

BIG warning here guys - i found the oil filter cap V. tight and its made of cast ALUMINIUM so you only have to sneeze and its burred. Whoever tightened mine must have had a three foot scaffold pole as it was . . . eeep ! tight! what a MISSION, but eventually after two hours of struggling and one angle grinder to shorten my 24mm socket (the contact areas are 2mm inside the socket and i needed every square mm of traction). But it worked and pat on the back to Markjay for a clear "wassit loike" post :y
