You know how much oil is these days semi skinthetic well was thinking like its now sort of the norm i'm led to believe with our older Omegas to say do an oil & filter change at or around 3000 miles but realistically the oil should be good for much longer or so it seems looking at manufactures blurb do you think it would be an idea to say just swap the filter at 3k top it up with new (not much) then go another 3k, i know it sounds stupid but would think it would be filtered well again before its next 5litre + change.. ;)
Only a thought guys ::)

Hi Willy
Trade club prices are £33.53 inc vat for 4 x 5 Litres of Semi Syth.
Oil Filters are £1.22 plus Vat, sump plus seals are about .15p each.
Considering the interenals of the 24Valve V6 Quad cam and the fact that the engine cange it 5.75 litres
The cost of and oil and filter change is £12.67 and after 3 full changes there is still 2 litres of oil left over for top up purposes.
An oil and filter change at Charlie Browns is in the region of £35 and they dont use semi synth.
I would be tempted to do it yourself and go ny the forums recomendation and experiance of doing a change every 3000

Hi Skruntie
Hows you ? after leaving you made it ok 420+miles car purred along no probs monday , yer i know what you mean ordered trade card already , but its just that oil as improved vastly according to oil companies in last few yrs so it should be good for more miles than ever before especially if you filtered it again LOL ! its only a thought ..
God i lived in USA for like 6 yrs back in 70's & coz oil/gas was so cheap there some of workmates changed it every 2000miles i thought they were nuts !
Ps lot of em were ! ;D

Oil not only lubricates but cleans and cools. As it is compressed and heated by close tolerance bearings etc, it chemically changes and is no longer as good as it once was. Filtering does nothing to the actual oil, it only removes loose particualte matter.
Oil change intervals are, like cam belt intervals, primarily designed around the requirements of fleet operators .. the biggest buyers of cars by far. They require long intervals between services to reduce costs, and don't care about the long-term damage done to the cars, after all , they will be long gone by then.
Most of us are running higher mileage cars, by definition, so a little TLC goes a long, long way. The best PREVENTATIVE maintenance is an oil change ... new oil will not block breathers, will not congeal, will clean bearing surfaces, and will run cooler at the point of contact.
I could actually argue against you .. change the oil and leave the filter !!!, after all, new oil does not need filtering !!!!
As previously said .. an oil/filter change can be done for less than £15, 3000 miles is, for most people, in excess of 3 months, but at worst its 4 changes a year .... £60 a year on prevention that might save you an awful lot more than trying to fix things.
Just my opinion thats all, BTW ..

Nice one, glad to see the MPG is ok was a little concerned when you first mentioned how thirsty it was.
Will drop a lot when you start towing though. ;D :y
