Title: P0420 and Cheap Petrol !!!
Post by: Big_Roger on 11 June 2008, 21:03:02
Hi, An observation for your comments.

I generally use Shell or BP petrol, simply because the garages are convenient to me. Since I have had the car, (8 months) not had any of the 0420 cat efficiency codes.

Last Friday returning from long trip, early hours, low on fuel, stopped at Jet filling station. Did 8 miles and EML came on. Checked when got home 0420. Cancelled it, came on again when used car. Again cancelled it etc, continued this until yesterday. Refilled at Shell garage, cancelled code when got home.

Have been out today,(50 miles) no light, no stored code.

Apart from don't use Jet, any comments. Any one else had this?
Any one with this problem, what fuel are you using??

Roger

Hi Roger

It seems to be a problem on the later 2.6/3.2 engines with the pre cat. There are quite a few people on the forum that have had the same problem ;)

As per Pete's comments I'm one of those many. I too have noticed that fuel quality makes a difference. High octane fuel is even better for avoiding the code.

You are lucky so far, but you are not far behind many of us on here; eventually your pre-cats will be tired enough that the light and 0420 code is on there more often than it is not.

Don't worry too much; this is more a fault of over-sensitivity in the ECU programming than a real cat problem; the emmissions will still be well within the legal and MOT limits.

There is a solution to the code and the light though :y

I'm having this done on the 28th when I have a new stainless exhaust fitted.

Been driving with Redex in every fuel tank for the past 10 years, and the last 5 years also using only high-octane fuels. never had the EML light come on.... HTH
