To get your temp guage working again you have to re-connect the spade onto the temp sensor at the back of the cylinder head. It's possible the spade has fallen off or is loose or that the wiring is frayed. Here's a picture showing you where the temp sensor is in relation to the dispack and egr valve. You will be able to reach behind to put it back on if not on properly.

Personally I think the reason the car isn't starting properly is probably down to an air leak somewhere. Could also be the exhaust or crank sensor but would concentrate on an air leak before going down these routes.

I know the bit you are talking about. You should be able to just push it back on.

ok right i think i sorted it there was a plug missing and it was hanging of but i pluged it in and it seems to start when its warmed up now so i think it was the power plug for the EGR vale am going for a drive 2 day to york or wales but ill see how it goes cant find the temp gage spade i found the plug just hanging there but its hard to find were it goes lol thanx guys thanx alot all in all i got 2 wishbones fited , water pump, thermostat, oil , and head done for £260 so i cant complain if there is a plug not been pluged in lol

You should be able to work out where the plugs go from the picture. The temp sensor is a small round disc which is pointed out in the pic. So working it out from there you should be able to find where the plugs go. Do a paperclip test as well because if there are things unplugged at the back there I'm surprised the car goes at all.
Search "paperclip test" and you'll find out how to read the fault codes on your car. Post up the results and we should be able to help you further.
