Title: Black sealant used for thermostat question
Post by: Ironingboard on 17 June 2008, 17:42:35
Does anyone have any experience with using black sealant around the thermostat, does it break down or is it ok to use it?

I used it when I changed my thermostat and I've just resealed my oil cooler plate using the gray sealant, I'm wondering if I should take the thermostat out and reseal it with the gray stuff.

Any comments or experience would be appreciated.

This picture was taken before I resealed my oil cooler plate.

If it was a new state and housing with a new o-ring, then it should be fine.
If you were just resealing it then i don't think the black will last that long.

Grey sealent is more suited to the stat but, if its a new stat and seal then it should be fine anyway.

The black sealent works quite nicely on the stat threads.

Well it was annoying me that it might be leaking with the wrong sealant and opened the thermostat anyway.

I'm in the process of cleaning the old black sealant off and I found there's little of the black sealant left inside the thermostat.

The sealant that was left was very brittle which explains the small blobs of black rubbery stuff in my header tank and in various cooling pipes

So it looks like me and the bast**d bolt have got another run in tomorrow after we parted company destined never to be seen again  :y

As a tip, seal the vent hole on top of the power steering reservoir with some tape or a rubber glove.

Unbolt the reservoir and move it out the way (towards the battery), you can now get into the B-bolt easily and the power steering hose is also much less of a hinderance.

Thanks Marks, much appreciated, worked something like that out the hard way, except I push the power steering reservoir to the back.

I'll try your way mark and see what happens, no doubt I'll be on here later wondering how to change the power steering hose.
