Title: HBV Replaced but...
Post by: Lazydocker on 20 June 2008, 14:39:05
... unfortunately I managed to crack the windscreen in the process!!

It wasn't too bad a job to do TBH. Took me just under 2 hours, over an hour of which was trying to get the bl00dy wiper arms off!!!! My screen had a few chips and a small crack which I only noticed when I started but this has grown considerably now from my leaning on the screen when trying to pull wiper arms off! Never mind... I was going to get a new one anyway when I noticed the crack!!!

A small tip for anyone else who needs to do this simple job... When trying to get the arms off I soaked the spigot in WD40 (because it was to hand) for quite a while and then found that a gentle tap with a soft hammer on the hinge of the arm freed them off nicely! This after lots of cursing and swearing at all the other attempts!!  ::) ::) ::)

However, once the arms were off I think it took me just over 15 minutes to swap the unit over and then it was just a case of reassembly, topping up the coolant and bleeding/running it up to temperature to check for leaks!  :y :y :y

All in all not a bad job to do... Oh, and I didn't even cut myself, just one small scratch!! TBH I wouldn't have even got that if I didn't have such large hands!!  ;D ;D ;D ;D

Well Done, sounds like not too bad a job for you, and off to autoglass for a new screen!

I would be tempted to chuck new wipers on just before it goes so as not to risk scratching a new screen with old wiper blades  :y

I find a push / pull movement on the wiper arm soon frees em, bit of grease before reassembly should make it easier for next time  :y

I had the same problem - one of the wipers just would not come off.  I bought the heavy duty Sealey puller in the end which popped it off in a second.

Unfortunately I have to use RAC Autoglass people for my insurance... Not overly impressed about it TBH but never mind! I'll just make sure I watch him like a hawk!!  :y :y :y

The wiper blades are only 6 weeks old, 2 months at the most so I'm not too worried about them!

Job was actually easier than I was expecting! Next job... LPG kit I feel!

I couldn't get my puller to fit!!! That caused a fair bit of swearing I can assure you!  ;D ;D ;D

can you live with the crack until you re-insure it.  TBH I would totally avoid RAC autowindcreens

Errm... No. Not really. Firstly, it's a bit big and secondly, the windscreen provides a large proportion of the structural strength in a car and I like to know it's in good nick should I ever need that strength!!

I've not had any problems, personally, with them when they replace windscreens. It's just any other glass they seem to balls up. Mind you, I know at least one of the local fitters so I know he'll do a good job!

Another OOF member has some pretty horrendous stories regarding RAC Windshields ... just hope you have more joy than he did ....

Good luck is all I can say ... :y :y :y

I know... But I'm willing to give them a chance. Like I said, I've only ever had good experiences when they replace windscreens... It's just any other glass I've known them balls up!!

I wont pass comment but, I am now going to be looking for some new interior trim pieces to try to rectify the work I have had done so far.

Ow yes, 4 different fitters have worked on my car.....so the standard is not to high!

Please don't say things like that!!!! They'll be getting it right because I'm planning to stand and watch them!!!

It's not ideal but as the excess is only £75 instead of £Mega for a new one I'll have to chance it!! Like I say, I know one of the fitters and have asked him to make sure he does it if he can... I just hope all goes well!!!

Can you not get it done by a company of choice and then bill the insurance? My policy allows this. Worth checking  ;)

Unfortunately the small print says that they will only pay a maximum of... Can't remember but it'll probably take them ages to find it and I haven't the patience to call Mumbai and find out!!!

Nevermind mate. Im sure it will be fine if you are watching them and your mate does it. Anyway, surly it will be better than a broken windscreen. Not that I have experience in these matters  ::)
