Title: Crank sensor

Sorry to bother you all.  If I replace the crank sensor as suggested in another part of the forum and move the wires away from any heat how likely is this problem to occur again.  Reason I ask is that I do alot of Motorway work (M1) and last thing I want is for this to go again.  Very wary of it happening again to the point of thinking about selling the car and getting another omega even if problem is sorted. This is the first time it has happened to me since having the car for a year.

Its fairlt unlikely to reoccur for quite some time.
If you was to buy another Omega then the same could happen again.
Its the routing of the wires being close to exhaust and engine heat that lead to the failure, so after re-routing you should be fine ;)

It is a weak point on V6.  Whilst it should last for some time (the original lasted years ;)), I always carry a spare on a long trip.

If your is a 2.5 or 3.0, do a paperclip test weekely, and if 19 pops back up, replace it :y

Just wanted to say thanks, got the replacement crank sensor from local vauxhall garage.  I have a friend who works in the spares, when I described what the connector looked like on mine he was puzzled.  Anyway I went to see him in the parts dept.  He showed me both sensors side by side.

This is the difference as I see them and as he described them.  Look at the 3 pin connector as you are looking at it, where the wires come out of it the cover is either tapered but square in shape, the other is still tapered butt round in shape.  The other thing I noticed was the sensor on mine is stainless steel looking when I took it out.  The one I boughtd had a cardboard tube over the sensor to protect it.  The other sensor was more like a black plastic looking one.  Wish I had  looked at the sensor end first.

Ps I think I am going crazy just bought a 1998 cd 2.5 petrol with 96,000 on the clock timing belt has been done, this one is to go with the other. ;D ;D

yeah the metal bit of the sensor changed to a plastic one there was a small GM bulliten in my crank sensor box explaining if you had a plastic one and recieve a metal one or vice versa its the same sensor just different case's

i wrapped my sesnor in copex tubing and rereouted it onto the A/C pipes instead
