Hi,
After the glow plug light has went out it struggles to turn over for a few seconds. If I wait any longer than 2 seconds after the light is out it will take about 5-10 seconds to kick into life. Starters spinning fine, plenty of fuel and a good battery. Glow plugs then?

Sounds like my old citroen. That had the same and had glow changed... was sorted... so maybe. Im sure someone more qualified than myself will let you know :y
-
possibly, , try turning the the key on and off a few times then start and see if it fires up quicker, or u could take the plugs out and useing jump leads off a battery and test them to see, if the glow ok
-
What do you mean by struggles to turn over?????
Do you mean like the battery is nearly flat or do you mean it turns over fine but will not quite catch straight away??? :-/
-
Could be... Could also be the fuel bleed off pipes.
-
Does it start OK when the engine is warm, first turn of the key?
If so then it could be the glow-plugs.
Do you know how long they have been in the car? if you are approaching say 100,000 miles or have passed that then maybe it's time they were changed.
Mine gave up at around 90,000 and I believe they may have been the originals.

mine have now done 113281 miles still original plugs but i have for the last 8month had to turn ignition on wait till glow plug light goes out, the turn off ignition and back on again wait till light goes out and it starts immediately, if i try to start with just one go it wont!!!well it will after about 7seconds of churning on starter but its easier to do glow plugs twice!!!
Got new glow plugs to go in just havent got round to it yet!!! :'(

hardly!!! when working on cars out here you have to be very careful when picking up spanners! 106 degree heat in bright sunlight makes you drop them again very quickly!!!!! and i dont get paid to fix me own car!!!! ;D

Sounds like it is plugs then :y :y :y :y

Measure resistance of each glow plug, should be around 1ohm. In the main relay box is the glowplug relay. Unplug, and measure from here, as its easier than getting to plug itself.

Car will turn over fine once running, took it to local pub this morning, left it for 45 mins, switched on to glow plug setting, no light (presume engine still warm enough) but spun the starter for a few seconds before kicking into life. So either glow plugs or battery, goin to swap battery out of my landrover and see what happens. Will I lose my radio etc if I pull the battery out? Don't know where my code is for it :-/
Cheers,
Iain

Its likely you'll lose radio.
Have you measure glowplugs with meter yet?

Sure sign if it starts when warm but not when stone cold it's glow-plug failure.
I had mine fail on me in winter, and so long as I kept the engine warm it started no problems. Greenflagg started it up no problem from cold, just a squirt of Easi-start into the air intake pipe got it going. Only use this method to get you out of trouble though as not recommended to use too often.

Hi,
Not had a chance to get out at it, rain is thundering down. Going to get new pluigs for it on monday. Also noticed that the fuel cap lock tab's broke, so more things to fix :o

Measure they are faulty before changing willy-nilly ;)

£30 or so is worth it to get them changed, car is on 74,000 miles and there was no service history, everything i've changed so far has been original, even the oil!

It adds a further complication to the diagnoses randomly changing parts. Seeing as it takes about 2 mins to check all 6 are OK (bit longer pinpointing which one is faulty if one is), its worth doing first.

How difficult is it changing glow plugs on the 2.2 DTi?
I'm having starting problems too. I do not think it is likely to be the glow plugs but I'd probably want to replace them anyway as my car has just reached 100k.
