Title: Wheel bearing question

Hi folks, when doing right hand cornering i sometimes get a whinning noise from the N/S/F wheel. Thinking it could be the bearing i jacked it up and gave the wheel a jiggle about. There is a bit of play / looseness but only in the horizontal plane (9-3) and absoluteley no give at all in the vertical (12-6).

Would play be in both planes if the wheel bearing was on its way out?

Does it make a whining noise?? I am getting this in the rear of mine. But only at certain speeds and it seem to be when any movement to the left is made. It is like a whining old landy  ::) (Sorry Debs  ;))

Yeah it does, loud when you first pull off but after 5 mins or so goes quiter.  :-?

Normal test to confirm wheel bearing is to jack up the suspect corner and then feel for lost play at the 3/9 and 12/6 positions.  Then get someone to depress the footbrake for you and try the same test.  If the movement vanishes or is significantly reduced then the bearing is suss.  If the movement stays then its more of a bushing/suspension fault.

Could you explain the 3/9 and 6/12 please? Im a bit slow!!  :-[ ;D

Think Clocks .... hands go on clock position ..3/9 is horizontal hold wiggle left right.....  12/6 is vertical hold wiggle up/down ...  :) you are looking at an in/out movement of the hands really to check for excessive play

I did think that but thought it would be far to complex to be that  ::) ::) Well thanks for that entwood. I do feel a bit of a pranny now  :-[
