My miggy just failed its MOT on;
Front Discs and Pads
Rear Shocks Leaking Excessively
Centre exhaust box leaking
Rear Box corroded
Rear coil springs need replacing
O/S Headlamp Aim too high.
Nationwide want around £750 to do it, any better offers from anyone breaking parts on here???
-
Ouch, thats not a good bill of health :(
-
I've heard they fail MOTs to get more work in.
GM exhaust around £250, shocks £40 each, discs/pads £70 all for genuine parts on TC, +VAT.
Springs, £30 from factors
-
:'( :'( Thats not good matey! Hope you get it sorted :y
-
I've heard they fail MOTs to get more work in.......
Which is why my cars go to an MOT station that doesn't do repairs, so he couldn't give a monkey's left gonad, from a financial view, whether it passes or fails.

i could do all that for about £ 400 using new disc and pads and second hand exhaust and shockers and springs fella :y
-
I am half wondering if they are ripping me off...
Apparently they can fail brakes if they 'look worn'...
methinks they have a bit too much power....

Oh dear, bad luck :(
Thought it was down to the brake efficiency test unless something was actually lose / hanging off with a visual inspection. :-/
-
How convenient... it's failed on all the basic yet profitable components that Nationwide supply....
-
Rear springs 60 quid a pair
Exhaust 250 quid
Discs 80 quid
Headlight aim - adjust yourself
Rear shocks 40 quid (KYBs)
-
Is there not a minimum thickness for discs? Or to put it another way, measure them? With a micrometer? LOOK warn... ? Mariva 2 doors down went in for service at vx, advised new discs! Why? they will fail Mot. No wear at all, they look tatty, true, but no wear. Old ish car no miles lives outside, rusty discs fail an mot do they? Bo@@erx! Sorry but they do my bloody Nut In..... what where we talking about... Oh yeah, me, i would find cheapest price for exhaust and do the rest myself. 400 the lot sounds tempting tho.

They are robbing GITS, do NOT take this back, father tunnie was told stuff needed doing to his, when it did not.
First, take this to another independet MOT place and get it checked again, nationwide quote for work not needed.
Front Discs and Pads - £80 fix with GM parts
Rear Shocks Leaking Excessively - £100 fix with GM parts
Centre exhaust box leaking - £250 for Cat back GM exhaust, DO NOT FIT PATTERN
Rear Box corroded
Rear coil springs need replacing £40 each KYB which are OEM fit.
O/S Headlamp Aim too high £0
So £500 to fix using GM bits ;) :y

or like i said £400 for me to do it inc bits !! :y

IIRC, from back in my MOT testing days they can only fail discs for excessive corrosion/scoring/cracking. They can't fail them for "looking worn" because that isn't a failure item! They can only do that if they refuse to do the efficiency test! If they have done an efficiency test then the brakes can not be worn to the point that they are a failure!
If they've done the efficiency test and it has failed that then they are probably covering all potential causes of the poor efficiency!
I personally would take it to another test station and have it tested again! If you do that then don't tell them that you have already been issued a failure as they may try and cover the other testers back!
Of course, the other option is to go through the appeals process, which means that the person who failed it will get disciplined if the failure was not justified.
-
guess what brakes give the best efficiency?? when they are metal to metal!!. on the new computerised mot system you can fail discs/drums etc for being"worn" i will fail a brake disc for excessive wear , it tends to be the "lip"" round the edge of the disc showing how much the disc has worn. the official line from VOSA is unless the componant has or is very close to the end of its servicable life...pass and advise . for your info VOSA are very aware that these nationwide chains tend to have a high failiure rate on.....shocks,tyres,brakes and exhausts!!
-
So is there a best national place to get an MOT that will remain impartial and not act like as5 holes?
-
shouldnt say this but if you can find a halfords with a test bay? have been on a few courses with halfords guys and they seem ok :y
-
My miggy just failed its MOT on;
Drop me a pm mate with your location...mate of mine is an MOT tester and a genuine bloke, might be worth getting him to give a second opinion mate.
-
Best place is the local council garage, they have to do MOT's (to suuport thier own fleet so have to offer it to the public to) but wont do repairs......

What do you mean by local council garage mark?? :-/
-
Right, i have the failure sheet in front of me now and quelle surprise, it differs from what the guy said on the phone...
They coded the items as amber/red/MOT fail
Brakes = Amber
Shocks = MOT Fail
Exhaust intermediate silencer corroded = MOT Fail
Exhaust tail pipe corroded = Amber
Headlamp Align = MOT Fail
The coils aren't mentioned on this sheet, but they are on the advisory notice, one as a failure item and the other as a warning.
So.... Repair centre box...
Replace Fr discs + Pads
Replace Rear Shocks + Coils
Align Headlamp
Anyone breaking 2.2 shocks/coils on here????
-

Just a question, and I might be a bit dim here, but what is actually wrong with the coil springs? Is one broken, damaged or what? Surely if the spring is broken you would notice a difference in the handling?

Many of the councils still have thier own garages for maintaining the fleet of vans etc.......some have out sourced it but, not that many.

Nice looking silver 51 plate if memory serves me correct.
Mark regards the council mot places do you know if theres a blanket price or varies from depot to depot.

dont really know that place never been there

An ex employee of mine left to go to to work at Halfords car servicing emporium. He left in the end because he was fed up with telling customers they needed new brakes when he knew they weren't needed. This is par for the course for the big fast fit easy-job in-out chains. Go somewhere a bit more honest. Spotless workshops and £5,000 Snap-On cabinets are no guarantee of good value for money, honest work -in fact, quite the opposite.

I can vouch that there were NO £5000 Snap-On tool chests at your place Derek! :y :y :y :y
I just want the money to order a 24v Monza from you. ;) ;) :y

If only they could fail it on the state of your oil, i think they'd have a clean sweep of their portfolio..According to their "MOT", its wallowy, loud and won't stop...
I reckon that you'll save the cost of an impartial MoT in repairs alone. I'd take mine to a Council MoT station out of choice, but tend to take it to a place local to me with the starting words "Lets see how much this costs me in bits at (local trade supplier) - hopefully i can do it all this weekend".
Failing that - ask them how much to fit your genuine bits, as you get them trade anyway - and the lads in the workshop are a bit busy this week...

Normally a standard MOT price.....similar to other places.
-
a lot of bt workshops do it as well, for same reasons as council.
-
I used to use the council testing station years ago in Leicester. Top place. Took a daimler XJ6 in and it failed on handbrake pads. The tester told me they were a swine to replace(as they were on top of the inboard discs) but cut two access holes in the boot floor , replace and then pop rivet back down and seal with mastic!!!
I have got to say that I prefer the Spanish system of government run testing stations. Spotless, spacious, well organised and NO axe to grind. Makes a change for something to actually work in Spain!! can't see it ever happening soon in Britain. Too many vested interests. Shame really.
Hope you get it sorted.

Agreed that such a setup would be more impartial. Having experienced a few government testing stations in the UK, though, they tend to be stafffed by pedants in white coats rather than experienced mechanics with a bit of experience and common sense. Can't win I guess. :-/

I have bought a couple of s/h shocks from fleabay, just need 2 coil springs (ANYONE...???) and a brake set for the front and i'm sorted.
I'll repair the centre box if it's repairable, going to have a look this weekend.
-
Sorry, binned all the springs I had laying around here.
-
same here, i had 2 complete ones too :(
-
same thing happened to me took my car to kwik fit and they said my exhaust needed replacing and also the rear brake discs and pads.
i took it to another garage and it passed straight through with no problems at all
get a second opinion

Quick Question....
Are the 2.0 springs the same as 2.2 facelift??
-
Quick Question....
Are the 2.0 springs the same as 2.2 facelift??
Yes, as long as its the same floorpan (i.e. estate or saloon) and not a 2.2 sport
