Title: Omega 2.2 diesel with top end tap.
Post by: HNO3GOH on 03 July 2008, 18:58:26
This car has not been started for over 3 months due to needing big end shells after the turbo went. Fitted the big end shells today and started it to find that the slight noise in the bottom end has gone but it now has a tap in the top end also does not run smooth on tick over just as if it is running on 3 pots not 4. The engine has not had the sump on for the last 3 months so all the oil had drained but after the big end shells went in i put in new oil and started it and so did this tap. I took it for a run and it still taps so my thought of just needing oil at the top end goes out the window.

Can anybody give me some ideas as to what it might be :(

It does sound as though it is tappet related - assuming they are hydraulic is it possible that they have an airlock?

This may explain the tapping and possibly the poor running. Long shot but a possibility?   :-/

Run it for 15 minutes, the lifters can bleed down over time and can take upto 15 mins to re-fill fully.

hmm if bigends went on a diesel there is a fair chance the pistons hit the valves and bent at least one hence the poor running!!!
hope not for your sake tho!!!! but its a posibility!!!s

Well problem now sorted. Got the cam cover off today to find that one of the rockers had snapped so not any thing to do with the turbo going or the big ends just sodding bad luck.

Thanks guys for your ideas  ;)

rockers only snap when valve comes into contact with piston fella !  :( sounds like you were lucky and not bent it ! ::)
