I have had this problem for a while now, when going reasonable fast and then brake the steering shakes, if you go normal speed it also shakes when you break, but if you pump the brakes slowly then break it doesnt shake ?
I have changed the track rod ends, to no avail as they seemed a little to much play in the ball joint.
So could it be the disc, or one of the break cylanders seezing, or could it be some joint worn, someone reconed it could be your tracking, but not sure about that.
I have mentioned the pumping of the breaks to see if this could relate to a direct problem ? :'(

Any play is suspension/steering can cause. Jack it up and check for play, esp in wishbones.

sounds like warped discs ?also have you checked your front wheel bearings for play?? :-/

If all the suspension is tight - it's the disc's, only thing to do replace the 'disc's and pads', with TC, GM (Vauxhall) cost about £80 for the lot. It is called 'warpped discs' but is really 'hot spots' caused by braking so the pads and discs are red hot, then holding the car with the foot brake, worse with auto's, always use the hand brake

I will check the bearings. the warped disc, if this was the case would by pumping the break slowly before the initial break stop this shake, because most of the time it does ?

This definately sounds like warped discs. If you feel the pedal rising slightly in time of the revolutions of the wheels (Approximate estimation needed here) it is because the brake pads are pushing the pistin in the caliper back out and sending pressure via the brake fluid back up the system to the pedal. It will only get progressively worse and in time become dangerous.

my bet is on warped discs..They can be machined (not advised) or changed completely..
ps: also rear discs can face the same problem..

I would say wishbone bushes. A torn rear bush is very hard to spot but gives a good steering wobble especially when braking from higher speeds - like motorway slip roads.
Wishbone bush failures are very common and quite cheap to fix - £20 a side for a new wishbone.

grrrrrrrrr so many possibilities.
But the info will give some options, unfortunetly the warped disc you cant see, so I will try the pedal thing and see if I can feel the pedal rising.

I need a mot soon I think I will wait to see if they pick up any bushes. if not discs it is.

money money money, these cars are great to drive when things are running smoothly, but when there not, they are expensive, I seem to have bought a car that was near having problems.
I have noticed although this may be usual, when you get to a corner or trafic lights, when you put the hand break on it feels like its breaking to one side, as the car seems to grip one side and not the other ? its like it dips a bit on one side, the shaking couldnt be due to a siezed brake ?

oh I have noticed the problem more on motorway slip roads, just a coincident ? or is it that the discs have got hotter and the warp is more noticeable ?

Then without doubt front disc's are the problem :'( :'(
P.S. Always use the hand brake ;) ;)

Could be the higher speed making more wobble, could also be, as you say more heat caused by higher speed, this would imply to me pads are binding a little. And binding could be seized caliper slides not allowing the caliper to centre on the disc or the caliper piston not retreating in the caliper when brake is released usually caused by trapped seals, or corrosion on the piston esp if the rubber gater is damaged.
Theory of myn(wip) wobble at a given speed, balancing. Intermitent/random wobble, suspension play. Wobble on the brakes, brakes, ie brake components such as discs or caliper.
Trouble with rules is there is ALWAYS an exception, and rightly so. Anybody?
Edited, wobble also can be caused by poorly seated discs if just changed, but dont think that ones for you from you said. But if you do fit new discs obviously make sure the hub is clean and perfectly flat. And use wheel nuts to centre disc on the hub before you tighten the disc bolt. Guide on here.

Yes I agree to you have said but this problem IS the front discs.
Change the discs and pads with GM units, then don't hold the car on the footbrake, USE THE HANDBRAKE !

the discs can be checked for warpage if you have access to a dial gauge or similar.

What! Try using the footbrake :)
Have you checked your rear springs... this sounds like one may be snapped and causing the rear of the car to stoop down under braking. Will knacker ya tyres also.
