Title: Broken Cam belt
Post by: Nevar1 on 09 July 2008, 19:26:51
Hi, I have a 1996 2.0 ltr Omega, I have just broke a cam belt at about 10 - 15 mph, what are the chances of no valve damage. There were no bangs, clanks, just lost power and died. If no damage can I do it myself, would my road side breakdown cover, retime and fit the belt. :-[

Had a cambelt break on a 1600 Capri many moons ago almost exactly as you describe. no valve damage. You might just get away with it .Possibly. Good luck. ::) ::)

seen  alpha 147 with stripped belt, could see the valve marks in the sooty deposits on top of the pistons  by looking down the plug holes, but that had 2 plug holes shallower plug wells than the omega and a transverse engine. Meaning it was a lot easier to see the piston tops with a torch than i imagine the omega to be. If you can see in there... Not likely tho. A Scope would be handy... As would somebody who knows outright if its an interferance fit?

All you can do is try, it doesnt take long to sling another belt on the 2.0 and see.

There will be bent valves.

Roadside won't cover it

odd for the belt to snap, usually the tensioner or waterpump that goes on the 4pots.

something seized?

I don't think the AA etc would refit a cambelt - more likely tow you to a garage/home.

Fitting a belt is easy enough so probably worth a try but I wouldn't be hopeful.

How long was it since the last change?

If its snapped then the valves WILL be bent....if its jumped one or two teeth then you might be lucky!

I agree. Minimum 2 valves will be bent. If you lucky, will end up with new valves and guides.
How much is the valve guide replacement (labour)?

I had a cambelt break on 2.0 Lit Omega when it was just 3 months old!  Vx dealer collected car within 1 hour, fitted new belt kit in afternoon and had car delivered back to me ready for business trip out to St Etienne starting that evening.  Car completed just short of 120K miles in 2 years without further issue!

99% chance that the valves will be bent  :(

Worth a try at sticking a belt on, but I would start looking for a second hand head / engine myself.

If valves are fine... go and buy a lottery ticket! ;D

I have a colleague who had an old 750 - lovely car but the bills!  (never mind the petrol).

I heard that if you take a 4 pot BMW for service they ignore you, 6 pot they are polite, V8 they smile at you, V12 they hold a party in your honour ::)

100k+ out of a set of wishbones isn't really unreasonable, especially given the tough life many Omegas have..

AFAIK all vauxhall 16 valve engines are interference... All 8 valve engines are worth sticking a belt on because they rarely do damage.
