My 2.5 v6 wouldn't start today. It turned over strongly but wouldn't fire at all. I've had it towed to a local independant who have got it going and say they reckon its a faulty Air Flow Meter and that'll be £300 please.
Before I authorize the work any of you experienced guys got any comments?
Does it sound right?
I've spent over £2500 on various repairs and servicing over the last three years and I'm getting to the end of my tether.
-
No it doesn't sound right at all!
1) I am yet to see a MAF fail
2) MAF fault codes are commnly thrown when the crank sensor plays up (code 19)
3) With a fully failed MAF it would not stop the car from starting.
-
Sound unlikely. Far more likely to be the crank sensor at fault which is a far cheaper fix. Seems that it's not uncommon for garages to claim MAF sensors are faulty and charge you a bomb. You need some confirmation of fault codes.

Thanks guys, I'll go get it back.
I'll see if they can give me the error codes.

Short out pins 4 and 6 in the diag connector with a paper clip and read them yourself.

Thanks Marks,
I just watched the video and printed out the photo for the "Paper Clip Test".
I really appreciate the help.

Spoke to the garage again because I can't get a lift to pick the car up tonight.
They say that when it was recovered to them they simply turned the key and after a few seconds it started up. They have logged error code 74 "Mass Air Flow Voltage High".
They are only charging me for recovery if I want to take it away.

As said on another thread, are you in the west of Northants, ie around Brackley area ;)

Technically, its uphill from Towcester ;D
Alex W - yes, I'm in Brackley should you want some a better diagnosis on it...

Spoke to the garage, the car started on first turn of the key this morning so I will be collecting it this afternoon.

Get it home, then do paperclip test on it. Then post back here :y

Sounds like it is the MAF sensor after all. Buy a second hand one though, new costs a fortune and they rarely fail so used one is fine. There are plenty of folk on here that will be able to sell you one for peanuts.

What size engine is it?
-
2.5 V6
-
are you able to check for airleaks on the intake?
-
Sorry, wouldn't know where to start.
-
I believe there is an air leak somewhere though. When I accelerate quickly to 4750rpm I hear a whistling down similar to that made by a slipping belt

Thats most likely the issue!
I'm busy today, but if the weather is nice tomorrow (too much junk in the garage), you can pop it over. Or if Tunnie is around, use his garage ;D

Weather looks decent today, so pop it over. I'll PM you address.
