Guy's and Gals,
I'm about to change the plugs on my car and the how too states that the gap should be 1.00 mm. however the GM plugs (FLR8LDCU) out of the box are .75mm and the Haynes book of lies says don't adjust the gap on Dual electrode plugs.
So whats the consensus? :-/
-
fit the gm, do not adjust.
-
Me, i'd just wack em in as is.
Is it important these days?
-
cheers guy's let's see if I can manage it before the rain comes down then!
-
I think it was only important on the older single electrode types.
The new multi tips are preset, so just whack 'em in
-
i really must read more thoroughly. Dual electrodes (and 4) come in from the side? So bending the electrode will not adjust the gap in the same way a single electrode will, as it comes in from the the bottom. If you know what i mean.
-
OK I've removed the coil pack and the 4 rubbery bit's that go down to the plugs are dripping in Oil is that right or should I have major worried?
-
on v6 its caused by blown cam cover gaskits, caused by blocked breathers, yours is 2.2 which i an not familiar with. But sounds similar prob.
-
That's not too good...Time for a breather cleanout and a new gasket. Oil down there can cause misfiring, fault codes 'n' all sorts...
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news..
-
should I carry on changing the plugs or put it all back untill I can do the cam cover gasket
-
ideally, dont drive it til fixed but you prob need car to get gaskit. Depends how worried you are about further damage, but its prob been like it a while. Up to you. Do vx parts depts close at 12 or 1?
-
Is this something I should try myself or should I take it to a garage?
I'm technically minded by ususaly think about donning the brown trousers when it comes to anything more than a service on the car.
-
diy for me.
-
Changing the cam cover gasket on a facelift 2.2 is a doddle, i did it..
As long as you're anal about cleaning everything so it doesn't leak again, you'll be fine.
-
I've left the old plugs in for now and put it all back together it fired up OK.
I don't feel confident enough to tackle the gasket on my own so I'm going to phone round on Monday and see how much I'm going to get mugged charged to get it done in a garage.
What symptoms should I have noticed that this had happened or was happening?
The car rarely does in excess of 2k miles per year but in 8 weeks I'm of to Cornwall for a 1k mile round trip holiday.....or maybe I'm not! :'(
-
4 pot cam cover gaskets easy. Ensure the breathers and throttle body are cleaned as per Audo Addicts guide in Maintenence Guides section, else you'll blow the new ones as well.
-
Well I've stopped sulking now and weather permitting will attempt the gasket change and probably the breather clear out next weekend.
The timing belt also needs doing but that may be just a bit too far for my brown trousers I might need bycicle clips as well!!
Thanks for all the advice today guy's [smiley=dankk2.gif]

Blimey! What mileage is on it now then??? Good luck with the work :y
-
I've just passed 80k it had 68k on it when I bought it in 2004.
Since I started work in the City I have to get the train so the missus uses the car more than I do.
Once I've done the work I think regular length trips might be in order to help blow the cobweb's out of the pipes.......It might help the car as well :)
-
see how you feel after the cam covers, belt not to bad on 4 pot. more regular oil changes will help keep breathers clear,as will longer journeys. :y
