Title: towbar electrics
Post by: Andy B on 26 July 2008, 12:49:44
When ever people have asked about wiring their towbar electrics I've always said that there's a square-ish socket in the boot with a blue/red (rear fog lights) bridging wire plugged in.
I've just returned form the scrap yard with a driver's door window - not the easiest thing to do when you can only open the door enough to just squeeze into the car - and in preparation for rewiring my car with a 13 pin socket ie remove what I've already got fitted, I looked for this socket so I could replace my 12N wiring loom with the original plug complete with blue/red bridging wire.
After looking in the boot of 2 saloons I've now come to the conclusion that it's either not fitted to all cars or it's fitted else where.  :-?  :-/

My Facelift didn't have a bridging wire. There is a set of contacts built into the connector  which close when the plug is removed to connect the fog light.

Mine was on the driver's side behind the boot slam panel plastic trim. Connector was more round than square, IIRC. :-/

I had the trim out at the back of my wife's Astra G and found the equivalent socket, hers was round too (Ooer!) so it must be an age thing. The contacts in the 12N socket is replacing the bridging wire in the original socket in the boot before the towbar loom is fitted.
