Title: Something else I have noticed
Post by: Pete1968 on 27 July 2008, 16:11:24
Whilst underneath the flying sofa sorting out the driver's side wishbone yesterday I saw the rear of the block looked damp.  I've had to top up the coolant tank a couple of times in the past month - not a lot, just a pint in total I think - so I'm guessing I have a split hose or core plug gone somewhere. towards the rear of the engine.

Does anyone have any clues before the sockets come out to play again?  :)

Heater Bypass Valve!! Remove wipers & plastic scuttle to give yourself a bit more access. £25/30 from Vx

I would suggest in order of liklihood for a slow water leak.

1. Heater bypass valve
2. Coolant bridge
3. Oil cooler cover
4. Stainless steel coolant transfer pipe seal (back of engine)
=5. Head gasket and Cylinder Head Core Plug

The HBV can be checked without taking anything off (back left hand side of engine plastic thing with coolant pipes and a vacuum pipe into top. feel round and see if it is wet anywhere. Sometimes it only leaks when the vacuum is lost (ie on switching off etc.)

Points 2, 3 and 4 can be checked out by removing all the induction gubbins (plenum, Fuel injection kit and flange) not too complicated. Point 5 only by removing the head(s) unless you can get a camera or an inspection endoscope round the back to see.

Its worth saying look at the HBV now.  they have a habit of p*ssing over the DIS pack and taking that out

Never really understood how a leaking HBV affects the DIS pack so badly on the V6 when it is at the back of the drivers side head and the DIS pack is bolted to the passenger side head unless it runs along the other pipes and drips down. Perhaps this is more of an issue with the 4 pot engines. Not sure where the DIS pack is on these.
