Hi all,
Just a wonder if I can clean my atf filter rather than buy one? dont know if this is viable, but if anyone out there has any ideas, would love to hear!

I wash them through with a bit of parafin

I know some people say you can clean them and reuse BUT!!! would you clean and reuse an engine oil filter?? I think not, when you think of it most people would only need to change tranny fluid and filters maybe twice in the time they own the car? so and this is only my personal view i would change for new!!!

Totally different to an oil filter for engine oil.
Engine oil gets exposed to massive ammounts of contaminents from blow by gases.
The filter in the autobox is nothing more than a fabric gauze to stop bits of clutch and thrust washer getting ingested......they clean up fine.

yup know what you mean about the differnce but the filter is there to keep the fluid clean its not s gauze but a special type of foam and is designed to hold and trap/remove particles of brake band and dirt that may get in whilst refiling the box etc i still wouldnt attempt to clean one, dont think its worth ithe risk

To be honest, when I did mine at 100k +
It looked spotless, I had already bought a new one so fitted it, doubt I would bother removing one again, most the crap seems to be around the magnet.

Off myn it was actuallly completely clean. Nothing on
The magnet at all, nothing anywhere.
So, you might say, it depends what you find in there?
You may prefer to put a new filter in if you find a load
Of bits in there, or if, like me, you find it mint. Just
Clean the old one, and take the new one back if you
can?(i actually never bought one)

Join ABS and contact Dave Kember and you can buy the filter and the two gaskets for £30 + P&P.
Incidently mine just got cleaned when the fluid was changed at 60K but I do have a brand new GM filter (thanks eBay!) for the next time.

JPAT sell filters for £18 iirc. I guess for that sort of money, always worth changing, incase you strip it down and the filter is knackered.
Then clean up the old one ready for the next change?

I got the filter plus gaskets from Dave Kember so had a new filter anyway. Cleaned up the old one, which didn't look dirty at all, TBH, so might re-fit next time but at 35 quid delivered for filter plus gaskets it hardly seems worth it.
