Worth changing the fuel filter for starters - its often neglected.

I would also recommend cleaning out the breather pipes/throttle body/idle control valve etc.  There is an excellent guide in the maintenance section on here.  Its an easy job and makes a world of a difference.

Give these a go - won't do any harm - and see how it goes then.

checked all breathers and throttle body all clear its wierd because once started, it starts all day after no problem and it runs excellent no misfires or splutters its just that stone cold starting issue.

What rpm does it idle at?  I had problems starting due to mechanical idle being mucked about with (by me - no-one else to blame I'm afraid)?

Dis pack maybe, camcover leak causing oil to leak into plug holes and cover plugsl.

Although I'm not a mechanic

checking order should be

fuel delivery ,

ignition components  (sparks , cabling and other)

compression testing..

also solution could be as simple as air leak from gaskets..

idle is about 800rpm and smooth, once started from cold after at least three attemps it wont seem to rev just spits and pops after 20 secs it runs perfect :(

Not idle problem then.  Either too much fuel or too much air.  Check for air leaks first.

Just found small breather hose blocked up with a hole in it, it had also gone almost chewy like, done a strip down all hoses and throttle body cleaned with carb cleaner offending hose replaced all blown through and dried with compressed air, hope its done the trick ;) we will see tonight. Thanks for all your help and sugestions ;D

Check the plugwells for oil as jimmas says and another favourite is to take the plug cover off in the dark and see if you have a firework display.

Worth checking for fault codes, esp as 2.2 eats up cam sesnors, which make them a bugger to start

diagnostic showed crank sensor open circuit, new one fitted yesterday but still a pig to start this morning. so this cured eml but not the original cold start fault aghhh.

Hi

Had the same prob with my car a few months or so ago with mine it was a very small hole in one of the rubber fuel pipe in the fuel pump unit in the boot of the car.

I just removed carpet and removed the    4 srews on the plate removed the twist off top of the pump and checked the rubber line.
Cut the pipe back reconected and all has been fine since.

hope this is of help :y

I will PM you my details if it will help

Doubt it would be a crank sensor on a 2.2, more likely to be the cam sensor, these cause poor starting.

Only 6 pots seem to suffer from crank sensor failure.

4 pots suffer from cam sensor failure.

Tip, only fit a genuine Vx cam sensor.

Cold start was still terrible eml back on tried swapping maf sensor with mine and it started as it should. New maf sensor fitted yesterday started spot on this morning and eml gone off so fingers crossed might be able to put this one to bed because i felt bad because it was my idea for him to get this car and i chose it for him after looking at sevaral over priced pigs. Anyway other than this he thinks its the dogs nads, thanks to everyone who helped. Colin :y
