Title: Aux belt tensioner
Post by: amba on 30 July 2008, 13:07:56
When car started from cold most mornings get quite a noise coming from area of aux belt tensioner, but this does go after a while on tick over.Could this be the tensioner pulley that requires re packing with grease or would it be wise just to replace the unit.Do I need to replace the entire tensioner unit or would I just require the pulley, assuming they can be bought seperate.

You have not just changed belt have you?  I had a squeal just like that with an Autovaux belt which turned out to be from a batch that were ever so slightly short. (They replaced it)

Otherwise may be worth repacking the pulley bearings, or if you can't be bothered, just replace the pulley (I think they can be bought on their own for the V6)

Belt has been on for about 4 months without any issues, its just when started from cold ( only ) get a whirring noise from that area  which does go when engine warm. Was wondering if grease within pulley assembly was degraded and noise went when bearings got warm.
Can you just replace the pulley ?if so can this be done witghout removing entire tensioner or can just pulley be removed.

Just whip it off and pack it - almost the same work to change the pulley which is available seperately from the tensioner.

BTW if you have changed the cambelt (VX one) you could also get the squeal on start up - I did until the belt settles in

Should the pulley bearings be packed with standard grease or anything special. Also do I need to remove the entire assembly unit to get just the pulley off.

standard high temp grease ! all you need to remove it is a 15mm spanner !  :y

Not many cold mornings of late around here!
I don't think repacking will help for too long.  Replacement is probably the answer, I changed mine complete but afterwards found (on here) that vx do the bearing on it's own (c. half the price) but is not obvious on their parts list.

Replace it!

Mine started to make a noise- a week later it disintergrated and the belt got all tangled up and shredded  to ribbons!

I was lucky it didn't break the cambelt too......
