Title: Fuel Sender on a 2.0
Post by: the_bed_wrecker on 16 July 2008, 21:28:10
Hi,
Just got a 2.0 CDX on duel fuel, the petrol gauge is not working and I think its the sender because when LPG it reads OK. (i think)
Where are the senders at on these and whats the easyest way to get to them ?
Cheers for any help,
tbw

The fuel gauge sender is (not surprisingly) in the fuel tank. I have never changed it (even though I should), but according to Haynes it should be fairly easy. The whereabouts of the fuel pump and sender can be seen in this guide by Grumpy:

Make sure you take some pictures while doing the job and post it as a maintenance guide :y

Thanks for that, on some cars it hid the back seats.

1) Unplug electrical connector (turn off ingnition first !)
2) Check for 40-280 Ohm's on two righthand connector pins (where Brown and Bluewire would go to) If its open circuit then senders gone.
3) If OK try shorting out Brown and Blue wire on white connector, then turn key to see if there is a reading. If no reading with short then fault is else where and not sender.

To get to sender / fuel pump
1) Turn ingnition off
2) Pull back carpet in boot
3) Remove 4 crosshead screws that hold inspection cover
4) Remove cover
5) Unclip white connector
6) Losen petrol pipe clips
7) Mark petrol pipes so dont get mixed
8) Remove petrol pipes
9) Unscrew outer locking ring anticlockwise (use big screw driver and hammer if needed) until removed
10) Pull two pipes and the top of the tank should come off, be carefull not pull to hard as sender wires are fixed to it and will snap under to much stress.

To get fuel pump out
1) Press in the three tabs and pull up and it should come out.

To get sender out.
1) Push the the plastic tank that was around pump towards the front of the car. I used a long screwdriver, makes getting sender out easier
2) There is a plastic "coat hanger" on fuel sender, push this towrds the outside and pull up and it should slide out.

Am stuck now, my sender is OK, but LPG / petrol gauge works only on LPG. I think its a GM factory fitted LPG convertion, has anybody got any ideas what to try next ? or any wiring diags so I can have a dig around.
Also when a change to LPG the LPG light flashes for a while, you hear the solenoids click over, it runs lumpy for a while (2-10 secs) then changes back over to petrol. Is there anyway to fault find on these sysyems or is a dealer job.
Cheers

Anybody know of a good LPG guy near Hartlepool ?
Its Ok on Petrol but when on LPG it's either changes back to petrol or runs like Sh*t. Can take it to the dealer but got the feeling might be time for a new bank loan  :(
