Title: 2.5TD WARM-START PROBLEM
Post by: Seth on 31 July 2008, 10:28:00
My tractor has difficulty starting when warm.
It turns over for a minute or two, then a cloud of black smoke before starting.

New injection pump and no.4 injector, new fuel filter, new glow-plugs, and in-tank pump/swirl-chamber/tank clinically cleaned.
Starts on the button when cold.
No EML light showing.
No glow-plug light showing when engine is warm either.

Any pointers chaps?
It runs fine otherwise.

its a well known problem, bmw in thier wisdom decided to not allow the glow plugs to come on when the engine was" warm"  many range rover owners go to ridiculous lengths to effect a cure with seperate relays and resistor etc etc, no need to do that just chip it and it solves the problem!!! :y

p.s i think ts the fuel temperature sensor where the glw plugs take the feed from to determine whether or not the engine wants heat, try pouring cold water overthe pump before you next hot start it and see if it makes a difference!!

As Omegatoy says, a chip might be a good idea - apparently will make its cost back in fuel economy by other accounts i've seen on here.  As you have a manual, then no problems with the marginal auto box..

Fuel temp sensor (where the glow-plugs take feed from) ...
Anyone know where it's located?

I think its on fuel filter, though I've heard Omegatoy say its in injection pump.

had this problem on mine about 2 year ago.
 is your starter motor tired?
when you start from cold the exhaust brake is shut for some complicated pressure reason. but when the sensor says its warm then it doesn't bother with glow plugs or exhaust brake and this requires faster turning of starter motor than a cold start.
a tired starter motor may still have power to turn a heavy loaded cold engine but may no longer have speed to turn a warm one.
