Was flying along the M5 last night, then got a strange vibrating noise from engine & loss of power. On hard shoulder car dies. steam piddling out everywhere even though there was no overheating. Stopped car opened bonnet, expension cap had popped off tank & sensor inside in pieces. Cam belt not failed as still on and spinning engine over.
No life in the car. is spinning over way to fast and has no compression (0 on compression tester) at least in pot 3.
The nice RAC man rear lifted me home!!! His diagnosis, HG failure or Cambelt slipped a tooth.
Anyone shed any other oppinions on this???? Or is RAC man likely to be right?

Which is very, very rare on the V6.
What was your anti-freeze mix like, and how often was it changed?

Have to have slipped a bit more than "a tooth" to lose compression like that.
The only thing I can think of that takes the loss of compression and the water in to account is the HG going between the cylinder and a water way. This would compress the water system. The chances of this happening on the same cylinder he tested are 6:1 though... And I've never seen a HG go like that and blow a cap off.

Well has to be HG or Valves meeting pistons. As cambelt still on I'd be reluctant to think valves had hit pistons, although possible I know. No clattering when turning over just spins with no hint of catching.
Suppose wont know until I get the heads off!

If the valves were bent, that wouldn't cause coolant to overpressurise....
I very rare 'proper' HG failure sounds likely :o

What causes HG failure? I always presumed over heating
due to coolant loss.
Putting rover crap designs to one side for a minute.

Thats the main cause of K series ones as well - localised overheating.

The coolant, if not serviced regularly and properly, can start to 'rot' away at the HG...

There's a long story there....cured in the end with a change or thermostat (unless you have one of the early 1.8's with plastic dowels - recinded for genuine kits, but still sold in aftermarket kits)
