hi, have a omega 2001 2.2dti with the y22dth engine, engine light comes on at very low speed and turbo cuts out, then after 1-2 minutes the light goes off - when you pick up speed and the turbo kicks back in. Purchased a odbII - did not talk to car, so returned. Gave in and took it to VX today - asked them to change the fuel filter while they tested tech2. .. Tech2 would not talk to car at all ... The only thing that's been changed is added Cruise Controll stalk about 6months ago (would that matter?).
Getting the car back later - any one seen this problem before with the diag port?
Did not want to pay for an hours VX labour - is it worth cleaning the Cam sensor?
Any way to check air sensor's ?
regards

Hi Ya.
I have seen diagnostic sockets that have been damaged due to tech's probing with the wrong tools, you could have a look at the socket and check to see if pins are inplace and in good order.
Another thought is the battery, what voltage is shown when you put a multimeter across it 12.5 is ok 12.75 good. (engine off) latest cars wont test below 12.5v.
Clean air sensor's with carb cleaner, just dont have engine running,I also use it for cleaning breathers.......Dirty air sensor use to turn on the auto choke on Fiesta's !

Hi many thanks, picked up car they wanted 3hrs min labour at 85 quid per hour to look at the diag not working, I'll check over the connectors and pick some carb cleaner up. Thanks for the help, dpanic88

Yeah, see it a bit, the Vx OBDII connectors aren't great - rarely see trouble on other cars....

Yeh.. Plus Vx wanted 88 quid just to plug in the tech2 and give me the codes, wow it was 50 last year what an increase

I work in Redditch most of the week so if you are able to get to Hopwood Services one evening around 6pm I could give the Autoscanner a try.

Not sure about the ecu.... But I've fixed a few 2.0dti vectra engines (pritty much the same as the 2.2dti) with cracked vacuum pipes which use to kill the turbo and put the EML light on!
Maybe worth checking them. On the vecs, the common place was on some rubber elbows that were fitted on the end of solenoid valves.

Hi that would be great, any day next week. Which will give me the weekend to have look at the diag port to see if there is any thing I could do saving you a wasted journey.

Ahhh, can't do next week as i'm working away, will be back the week after though so if you still need help then drop me a PM nearer the time we can arrange.

Last year my local dealer quoted me £45 for half an hour, to include any re-setting (eg airbag light) that they might be able to do within the time. Maybe you could persuade them that half an hour should be enough to 'get the error codes'.... it should be, shouldn't it????
BTW when I had a BMW and wanted to diagnose what I thought was a cam sensor (turned out to be crankshaft sensor) , they wouldn't quote me a price, just an hourly rate! I said I just wanted them to plug the thing in and tell me what error codes appeared. They said "it doesn't work like that - we find an error code, fix that problem, then look for the next error code, fix that, etc, etc, so there's no way we can give you a quote" >:(. Needless to say I didn't go down that route, but fortunately found an independent specialist who charged me a fixed fee (about £50 in today's money), charged me list price for the sensor and fitted it for free. Now that was good value. :)

Too right it doesn't work like that: you walked away! Trouble is there are so many people who do not care if they are ripped off (or do not know if they are) that garages can get away with it.

I heard about one that had a non responding diag port and it turned out that a cable had been trapped between the dash and the metalwork somewhere. It ended up going to Vauxhall and having hte whole dash removed to find the fault.
I like to be the bringer of good news. :)
