Title: Immovable car
Post by: Andy B on 06 August 2008, 19:26:44
I've had this happen once before, but it's just happened again. My auto Omega is often stationary for a couple of weeks at a time, but I used it OK this week end for 150 miles, however when I got in the car earlier, it started up fine, I engaged R to reverse of the drive but it wouldn't move at all. :-? I gave it a few more revs, but all that happened was, that the back of the car lifted slightly but still no movement backwards. I put it in D, moved forward a foot or so & then tried reverse again. All was OK again!  :-/ :-?
Any suggestions?

Sounds like the handbrake shoes are sticking.

Hi,
I'll also go for the handbrake sticking on as well. Had same prob with a Fiat based motor home I once had.

Does sound a likely cause, however mine only ever goes on at MOT time.  ;) :y :y :y

Let the handbrake off  :P :P :D :D :D

In all seriousness.... Handbrake is sticking. You can sometimes get away with taking the wheels off, let handbrake off and give the face of the hub-part of the disk a whack with a soft hammer, although this is only a quick fix to get it moving!!

You need to get the disk off and either replace or adjust the shoes :y :y :y :y

That's the problem then... Lack of use is bad for it!!

I'll whip the disc/drums of & have a look. I'm blaming the MOT tester last Monday during the handbrakes annual use/test  ;D

I reckon you'll find the linings have come off of the shoes  ::) ::) ::)

:o  :o I suppose I'd better look sooner rather than later as I need the car to tow the 'van to Kent in a couple of weeks.  :-?

Use it or loose it......your feeling the effects now of not using it.

Definately handbrake sticking on!

Strangely enough... I've recently had the same thought and started using mine much more... Try to use it at least twice a day now  :y :y :y :y

And pull it on enough so it would lock wheels, as if it was a manual.  With autos, temptation is to just go through motions of lightly pulling on (if that!)

On the few occasions I do use it, it's so that the weight of the car isn't resting on the park pin (technical term ;)) in the gearbox.

You should also drive a few hundred meters with it lightly applied once a month......

I usually do that when Mr MOT Tester applies it once the cat has been tested I haven't noticed it.  ;D  ;D

I must admit, in my experience you do need to use the car. Mine is used rarely and I am begining to blame this for the few little problems I have had recently. :(

I've got a few old bangers in my back yard which I rarely move and always leave the hand brake off them because of this problem.  Just start parking in gear - Edit... I guess that might be a problem on an auto but wouldn't know (never owned one).

I fix them by giving the hubs a good battering with a hammer until they're free.  Obviously you'll need to be a bit more subtle with discs at the back.  Sometimes they'll free just by giving the car a drive.
