I ain't to good with computers but our eldest who is 11 is going on at me to get her a Laptop, to do her homework on.
Now a guy I work with has had a laptop from this place so any chance you guys will tell me what you think?
I fancy number one on the list as its cheapest, but number five down daughter seems to think its a good one, don't know how she knows :-?

If its just for general websurfing and homework on office or similar , then number 1 is more than enough for your daughter. If it falls through or its crap when its delivered (its a grade 2) then let me know and ill do you one for cost (better spec than that for £330)

It will run like a dog, as its been Vista'd and hasn't really the spec to run it. It would run XP OK for general web/email/wp
-
He was telling me at work that this grade 2 just means that something had gone perhaps wrong with it and had been returned, then repaired.
I thought the first one was ok, she would be able to do her homework and surf the internet a bit with it wouldn't she??
She wouldn't want it to play games on! :y

What will run like a dog? or do you mean all of them?

I disagree TB.
I have an oldish dell celeron with 512mb ram and it certainly aint gonna set speed records but it is perfectly adequate to surf the internet and type office documents etc

Sorry, the first, didn't look at others.
Decent laptops aren't that expensive now... ...so don't be too tempted by grade b stock

I was looking at Laptop prices for a friend today, and Ebuyer was fairly cheap at £309, for a smaller screen, but about the same spec otherwise. Thing its better to loose £249 than £310 if it gets dropped, or a can of pepsi gets spilt in it. I don't know about the Cel 1.8g, but I have recently fixed a Cel 1.5G, and its very ponderous, running XP Home, compared to an Athlon 64. Having said this, PC world have got a recon Core Duo machine for £299, which I think even TB would rate. http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/editorial/clearance_homepage/?int=left_nav However a nice shiny new laptop is going to be appreciated no matter what the spec. A long guarantee is also a good idea, just in case :y :y

TB says Vista will run crap on that spec , i disagree , mine runs fine on it.

Vista is a seriously resource hungry OS.
I would not try to run it (well actually I wouldn't run it, period!) on anything with less than 1 gig of ram and a decent speed processor.
That laptop is failing on both counts.
Spend and extra £100, the difference in what you can buy is huge.
Dell are one of the few companies that will now sell you a laptop with XP too (although you have to specify it).

I agree, Vista is poooooor on an under specced machine. Bought a couple of reasonable(ish) laptops recently and both are slooooow, just to boot up. No doubt running XP they would be tip top but I suppose it's all about progress :-/

Hi, I have recently tried a Laptop to replace my desktop but there is no way I can live with a laptop keyboard, personal preference I suppose. It is a brand new Toshiba Satellite P100, it is only five weeks old and highly specced, I have not registered it so I assume the years warranty has not started yet, I am selling it at a bargain price, if you are interested PM me and I will talk it over with you. The spec is as follows Intel core 2 duo T5500, 1.6MHz, 2Gb of RAM, 120Gb Hard Disk, DVD Multidrive ReWriter, 17" Widescreen Display, Genuine Windows Vista Ultimate.

Give her a pencil and a library card. She can use the computers there for free and if you get off her now and again she could use yours ;D
I have a laptop but Chop now prefers to use the desktop as it's quicker and internet connected - laptops sound great at 11 but keep the £250 in yer pocket mate ;)

Novatech

do some nice laptops at reasonable prices .. and you can choose which operating system you want .. or none at all if you already have a disc.
Click on "view model" to see the price differences for the choices of operating systems. several past clients have purchased from here and been well pleased. So far no bad reports of after sales problems
-
Cheers for the link mate but I don't no one from another and what Ram or whatever I need :-[
All I do know is she needs something to do her homework on, perhaps going on the net to looking up things, and then if I fancy going on it downstairs to come on here or flea bay ;D
Thats it really ::)

Tiggers got a novatech lappy, had it a year or two now with no prob other than getting a bit hot which needed the dust cleaning from the cpu but I've trained her to do that herself now.

Now that's not true. I fell asleep watching cos Noel drags it out so much and the young un was still answering questions when I woke up.
Now who's the smart one ::) ;D

Nowadays to make a machine run well, you are looking at 1G RAM for XP, and 2G for Vista. A decent dual core processor (Intel for laptops due to power) is nice. For Vista, the added overhead of a powerful video card.
Now I know a lot of people will come back saying XP runs fine in 512Mb, but 512Mb is right on the limit for XP now, already paging lightly at that point. Laptop hard disks are relatively slow, so paging is bad, bad news. With many laptops having integrated graphics, stealing system RAM, the situation is worse.

For once, TB, I agree !!!!!!!. Guess what all my laptops need more ram!!

My current, but old Tosh has a P4 2Ghz, 768Mb RAM, and that really needs rebuilding every 3 - 6 months to keep it running reasonable. It has XP Pro on it, as Vista is really bad on it, taking ages to boot up.
The poor lappy is knackered - screen hinges gone, DVD writer (2nd replacement worn out), floppy drive mostly missing (yes has built in floppy, thats how old it is), and sufferring from being dropped when I was in bath a month or so ago (case and keyboard took the brunt). 'bout time I got a new one ::)
