hi all
was in the throes of an oil change today and the sump plug refused to come out properly. its stuck half way in and half way out just spinning. needless to say oil is spitting out of the plug hole.
i was told that the sump plug screws into a retaining nut thats fitted to the inside of the sump pan and that the likelyhood is that the nut has come free, maybe due to previous overtightening of the sump plug on the last oil change, and that i now need to take the whole sump off and get the nut spot welded back into place.
can anyone confirm this or let me know what the problem is cos ive got a poorly car piddling oil and no way of getting the sump plug in or out!
thanks in advance as always!
:y :y :y

Sounds like its been done up to tight and has stripped the thread in the sump :(
-
more likely stripped
-
can you get a screwdriver behind it ? if so use it as a lever and undo it at same time might come out ! :y
-
Wow you dont have much luck with your car do you?! Sounds like easiest option is remove sump and get a replacement?? I dont suppose a second hand one would cost a great deal from someone on here??
-
no need to remove sump. just remove plug, get it's size, drill the hole and fit a heli-coil.
-
do you mean its stripped the thread on the sump plug or on the sump itself? and is it true to say that there is a nut on the inside that the plug screws into and it could be that?
used screwdriver on it to try prizing it with that but no joy, stuck half way out spinning. doesnt even tighten half way or anything, loose as anything it is.
-
sounds like its already been heli-coiled and heli-coil has lost its bite. try putting a prize bar between plug and sump and see if it will bite whist unscrewing.
-
Stripped thread in the sump im afraid :(
Quite common when people tighten the sump plug up too much :'(

bugger. new sump and gasket i guess.
would it have been likely to have knackered the thread on the plug too?
-
By the time you get it out it may well have.
Only a couple of quid to buy a new one ;)
-
will call vx tomorrow and price up a sump pan, gasket and plug. doesnt sound like the kind of thing they'll have in stock though. anyone know what i can expect to be hit in the wallet?
grrr etc. i was ripping a v6 apart yesterday as well, if only i'd know then what i know now!!
-
cheaper option is to heli-coil it but it really does sound like it has already been heli-coiled
-
Same happened to me back in February, first off wrap string or cloth around the gap between sump and sump plug neck to stop oil leak. I then changed the sump (thanks to ISSUNAZ) thinking the thread in the sump was stripped, but it was the 'sump plug' thread that was worn, ie a new sump plug would of fixed the problem. :y
P.s. Helicoil can be a problem if it is the sump pan thread due to it being very thin material.

Get a 2nd hand sump if you can, i should imagine a new one is rather pricey :(
JamesV6CDX has done this job on one of his, so he should know how much and whats involved etc.....

helicoils wouldn't fail like that...

About £40 +vat IIRC and it comes with a new sump plug. Make sure you're quoted for the lower sump pan, because I think they call the big ally casting it fastens to 'the sump'
If I was more organised I'd be able to find the receipt for mine .... but I'm not ;) :y

fairly sure i sore a thread on here about this, sump plug screws into a nut welded to the sump pan. Over tightening caused the weld to brake and plug and nut just span around in the sump. I think he got a new sump in the end, price not to bad. Worth a search maybe? Hth

The steel sump pan has an ally insert pressed into it that carries the thread that the plug screws into.

ordered parts. pan, sealant and replacement bolts. Pan was 35 quid with trade card. Not too bad. Is it just a case of unscrewing the existin pan, droppin the oil and then screwin the new one in with sealant. No other parts to bugger about with?

I'd have a good clean up whilst the sumps off... Ideal opportunity to clean the pick up strainer :y :y :y

but i dont need to take anything else off to get the sump off? i read that on some older vehicles you need to replace a load of stuff before you can get the sump pan out but when i look at it it looks like just a few bolts and out.

but i dont need to take anything else off to get the sump off? .....
Just be carefull of the wiring to the low oil level sensor, it'll be brittle & easily broken.

good advice. thanks for this, i'll be sure to watch out.
*sigh* it never rains but it pours (oil) :P

Just a quick question on all this; can you drop the sump off the miggy engine without lifting it in any way? :-/ :-/

I'm far to fat to get under cars without lifting, but Tunnie probably could ;D
-
I would have tried a new plug first and if that works you have saved a few bob.

from the way the plug is moving im pretty sure its the nut on the inside thats busted. you can see interior shot here:

plug comes with sump pan anyway and on tc not really too much of a hit in the wallet. they dont have it in stock of course and i've got to wait til weds til i can pick it up but hopefully i'll get it sorted on thurs and will report back with some kind of triumph.
cue motorbike/tr7/herald jokes.... ::)

as long as you jack it up a bit you should have enough room. jacking will also put the oil towards one end of the sump pan if you've got it high enough which should help when taking the tinker off (if like me you cant drain it cos the plug is stuck). at least you can try and control the direction of the oil before it spills everywhere!!!!
it all looks good on paper as they say.... ::)
'course mrs ilovemyelite will have a less enthusiastic opinion should i p1ss oil all over the drive! :o
-
ive had this happen in the past & it was the sump plug, i put mole grips on it handles facing down & turned them whilst pulling down hard on the grips, it eventually skipped past the stripped threads & came out, even if the nuts come off inside it might jam the nut on one of the broken welds & at least still get the plug out.

Since you're replacing the sump, why not make your life easier (or at least cleaner) and drill a hole first to drain the oil?
