Title: spontaneous noise from front of engine...
Post by: Danny on 13 August 2008, 05:31:44
about 10 minutes ago my alarm started going off, car has been stood all yesterday since about dinner, but after i turned the alarm off i could hear a whirring noise coming from the front drivers side of the engine (near the air box?) which i would imagine is what it responsible for setting the alarm off, it stopped when i put the ignition on (not started)

i took the key out and came back in and a couple of minutes later it started again so i've been out to do it again but this time started it up and run it for a couple of minutes

anyone shed any light on why it came on so randomly, and what it is?

Hiya Danny, might it have been the secondary coolant pump? (on the heater circuit)

i'd thought about that, but is there a reason for it to randomly kick in at half 5 this morning?

I don't know what the whirring noise is but the alarm going off spontaneously could be power sounder - well known to pack up at this sort of age. (it has a rechargeable battery that gives up.)

on a pre-facelift then no because the power is fed of the ignition live.  However with a facelift/climate control it could possibly be a climate ECU problem but I'm guessing here as I do not know on the facelifts where the power feed comes from - pull the multiplug off it it happens again?

i've never had an alarm problem before on it and it's been fine ever since, so i suspect for now its directly linked to the secondary pump

shall be keeping my eyes on it anyway

AGAIN!!!! >:(

some more help is very much needed, i didnt notice last time but just now the alarm has gone off and again the motor i hear at the front of the engine is rumbling away but this time the self levellers have jacked the car up!

i've started the engine up just now and let it "sit down" again

anyone any ideas before i do something that will declare it an insurance write off?

self level system leaking, causing the pump to start up? Maybe? Would not have thought it could start up with ignition off tho. Hence secondary air pump posts i suppose. It runs any ambient heat to interior when ignition off. Have seen posts about it causing fires!!!(i think it was that anyway) Unplug it?
If it still does it, maybe self level pump? No personal experience of any of this so may be talking crap!

at this rate the car's gonna be sold stupidly cheap just to get the f***ing thing off the drive and out of my life

i dont have the time or patience to do little more than attack it with a sledge hammer

why would it only do it at stupid o'clock in the morning? my mum's been in all day today and yesterday and it's not made a sound
