Title: Cam timing

So the new belt is on after a couple of dramas inclusing a snapped water pump bolt (1st time using a torque wrench!) and a second problem I couldn't work out but which I seem to have sorted out.

With the new belt on and tension set, I turned the engine and needed to adjust the cams a bit with the crank locked as per DVD. I don't have a crank spanner but did get a 30 mil socket of the big offset nuts on the idlers. The trouble is that rather than move the cams, turning these nuts only seemed to slacken the belt. Fiddled around a bit loosening the torx bolts and getting the tension back to what it should be, turned the engine again and everything lined up dead on. But what was I doing wrong?

It was mainly due to this faffing about that I ran out of daylight halfway through refitting the aux belt, so I have to get out there early if I want to get to work tomorrow!

Turn the engine a few times and make sure it is still bang on.

Excuse me for asking but can you be specific about the following:

1) Is the upper idler torqued on exactly 40nm
2) Same for the lower idler - is it on 40nm
3) Is the tensioner at 20nm?
4) With the crank locked at TDC, can you confirm that
    a) The cutout on the bottom pulley lines up with the cutout on the   engine
    b) That the far left cam (as you look at the engine from the front) has the no1 marking at the top, the next cam has the no2 marking at the top, and so on
   c) That the tensioner is about 3/4mm above the mark

Also, is the snapped water pump bolt now removed?

I'd have thought you'd need to go some to snap one of those! - they're an M10 thread! ::)

Well, I have to admit I gave up on using the torque wrench and just tightened the idlers with a ratchet - I know, but they came undone that way and I couldn't trust myself with the torque wrench! The amount of adjustment needed was about half a notch so perhaps they did move in the end. Come to think of it, I didn't properly nip the torx bolts up at first, only at the end of the process. Maybe that's why I struggled?

The water pump bolt came out with a tap from the end of a screwdriver so I was lucky.

I turned the engine loads of times and reset the tensioner so that it was above the mark. The timing marks were spot on.

Fired up ok this morning. Perhaps I should get the the torque checked on those idler bolts by someone who can handle a spanner?  ::)
