Hello, I got a 1999 2.5 TD and it has a Autobox problem, when cold works fine but when warms up you can feel it jump out of gear then the message Auto Gearbox appears, still works ok over 60 really i think it is not changing down again, car has 130k on clock, been well looked after, any help?
Thanks Steve.

If it's the original box (AR25) on that mileage then it's about ready to be cremated, to be honest.
My advice would be to
A) Check the oil level, then get the ECU codes read (in that order)
B) Change it for an AR35 (you'll need to change bellhousing) which is a lot stronger.

Thanks, i know there is oil coming from some place as i drove down to SW France where i live from uk the other day, and after 1 hour at a steady 90mph smoke from the back, pulled over and gearbox looks wet, ok if i stay at 70-80 but 90 starts again. I just spent the best part of 1 hour reading about a poor man who fitted this AR-35 but still had the same problem,I moved here to relax not stress, as i am in FRANCE does the ECU Talk French?
Also can still pull off in drive but motor rev out to 2.5-3000 rpm will this burn out my clutches if i keep using it like this, don't much like using the stick shift, 1st gear is to short. Thanks for the help

HI XMACHINE, sounds like youve been reading about my problem then [104 posts & counting!], mine though is somewhat different as in this is the 2nd g/box [the guy i got it off fitted one but problem stayed] & ive fitted an AR35,so mine is electrical, it sounds like your g/box is eating itself & as the guys on here are a smart bunch & have had or heard of most problems [apart from mine :'(], so do yourself a favour & get an AR35 you can then have the option of "chipping it up" to make driving your miggy more fun. :y, oh & when you say its revving high on pull away is your auto box warning lit as soon as you start up or only when it gets warm, mine lights up before ive even started it so if yours comes on only when running its going to be the g/box, good luck anyway ;)

Hello, yes i read your problems last night in bed, up until 2am, so sorry i got stress from reading it!!
Mine starts fine runs fine in drive but after short time pops out of gear at low speed, now it used to take longer to do this but i have lost some oil from someplace so i am hoping it might be fixed by sorting that first, if not then the ar35 grarbox sounds like a plan but i want to learn somthing from your problems, don't want to change it and still same thing, anyway how hard is it to do? basic skills and tools ok?
Thanks Steve

hi XMACHINE, like i said mines a different problem as the warning is on before i start, changing the box is more "bleedin` heavy" than anything else, when changing the bellhousing be sure to have the engine end of the box facing upwards just in case the shaft etc tries to come out with the bell housing, you will find the starter motor bolts [especially the top one] a b/stard to get out, when i put them back in i first got a plain [as in non locking]thin walled nut, get the bolt through the hole first, you run the plain nut up the bolt first & tighten it fully [that way you dont have to hold the bolt head], after that put the original nut on & tighten, i found this invaluable as to get to the top bolt is at best impossible unless you want to remove the inlet manifold :o, i done my box with the car on 2 axle stands & lowered it on a trolley jack, getting it back up is a bit of fun as gravity is no longer on your side >:(, i used 2 trolley jacks, a lump of wood & a house brick!, but would suggest a strong friend or a russian female shotputter to help!, i was on my own & as a result suffered for days with aches & pains & trying to get the smell of atf out of my hair & clothes, [ thats what happens when the t/c doesnt come off with the box]anyway good luck :y,,,oh if you were stressed reading my post then how do you think i feel, & to make it worse im driving a rover 200 :'(

put a AR35 in, and chip it back to full BMW spec :y

Thanks that put me off, i drove her on to the tail lift of my lorry and had a good look under, the switch that goes to gear shift looks like it's leaking oil, very wet, also i forgot to say the sports button also does not work or lights up and the slippy start button. how much for a recon AR35? and will any old AR35 fit my car?, its 1999 2.5 TD CDX Estate.
Thanks all
