Drivers side front wheel - when rocked at 12 o clock there is some vertical play. This occurs with brake on or off.
Is this likely to be a wheel bearing? Do we have a guide or am I being blind?

Sounds like a wheel bearing to me.
Never seen a guide to be honest :-/
Sold as hub assy from Vx, about £82+vat, and easy to change like that ;)

No worries mate - it looks really easy, TBH.
My only concern now, is finding a torque wrench that can go up to 320nm ;D

It did cross my mind - how important is it to get this accurate? Is 'effin tight good enough, or is it a precise thing?

just been out to check mine and it only goes up to 140Nm :-?

Well you know my answer to that one James ;)
I was taught a lot of what I know by an old farm hand - it's probably why I spent a couple of weeks shearing off bolts when I started working on modern cars ;D
I think my hand is quite well calibrated now, though, after 3 years or more of Omega DIY Ownership :y

Play rocking at 12 o'clock/6 o'clock usually wheel bearing.
320Nm :o - long pole and 'effin tight. Big hammer may also help!!

Yes unless you have the correct kit its a pain in the backside even with a fully equiped workshop.
And on the original question if theres play in the wheel bearing it normaly disapears when the brake is applied.

Damn beaten to it!!! play with no brake applied usually disappears when brakes applied= wheel bearing play still there usaully means a ball joint, and i have a torque wrench that does them goes up to 350!!
more to the point tho the bearings are servieable just in case anyone doesent know? they come apart fairly easily so you can clean out old grease and regrease just be careful of the grease seals!!

ar your already there, ;D was going to say, i would expect the brake to affect any play. But i have not actually experienced this with the brake applied, i had an mot advisory of w brearing play so changed it, new one was exactly the same, sent it off thinking its faulty and they said it was within limits, but they destroyed it taking it apart, >:( in my experience you should feel some play, just.

In my experience you should/may feel some slight play, especially on passanger side... But then again, front wheel bearing is such easy to change, only the torque.. I set mine putting my 85 kg weight to a "less than a meter" bar and was also adviced fore hand that 320 is "all you can do +10%"
Rear wheel bearing is a pita, but doable, I can send you some details, but you should find it here also.

as above re rears, pullers and presses iirc, read someone did it with home made tools and some guile but sounded a bit of a mare tbh
