Hi all.
My 1996 2.5CDX has died, well almost, last few days it has been spluttering a few time when driving it, (EML was on anyway due to crank sensor) then yesterday it wouldnt start, just spluttering and popping back through the inlet, after about 30 seconds of trying it did start, rev and then seemed to clear but would stutter every now and again.
Went to drive it today and wouldnt start again, when turning on the starter it would fire then die then fire and die, eventually it did start but as i went to drive away no power at all and popping and missing all the time.
Just done the paperclip test on her and im getting:
61 Fuel tank ventilation valve low voltage
73 Mass airflow sensor voltage low
74 Mass airflow sensor voltage high
Not getting the crank sensor anymore!!!! (but did take it out and clean it)
Is it normal to get high and low voltage on a MAFS when they fail??
Also where the hell is the fuel tank vent valve??
Thanks for any help in advance.

MAF failures rare, unless a chavved up air filter have been fitted. Check for airleaks instead.
Cleaning crank sensor (or cam sensor, come to that) will not cure faults with them.
Wondering if exhausts are blocked :-/

Well checked for air leaks and none found, standard air filter is fitted and is clean, i have just bought a s/hand MAF off the net and will see if that helps.
Puzzled by the 64 code, where is the fuel tank vent valve??
When trying to start it at the moment its like the Balast resistor on the old Fords has failed, fires when the starter is engaged but let the key go and it cuts out, now i know there is no resistor on these but thats what it seems like.
I did have to replace the starter motor last weekend but had no problems when i had fitted it, engine was fine, no misfire etc so dont think i knocked anything when i was doing it.
Before this started i had the EML coming on but only after driving the car for a while, in town that wouldnt take long, only about 5 miles but if i got onto the motorway i could go for about 15 mile before it would come on. Once it had come on in the morning it would stay on all day if i used it alot but leave it for 5 hours or so and it would be out again.
On a recent run out it averaged 32.4 Mpg over 570 miles so seemed to be running OK despite the EML.
The codes were:
O2 sensor, Crank sensor & Knock sensor.
Oh and made a mistake, its a 98 not 96 Doh so think its a mini facelift.

64 will be at the back of engine, drivers side.
Still worried about that 19.
Guessing knock sensors could be related to misfires, not sure :-/

Oh, and its normal to get erroeous MAF codes if the crank sensor dies...

Right changed the MAF and the car is running OK now but still got the codes in the ECU, does the ECU clear all codes itself or do they have to be cleared manually?? if so how??
Also now got:
129 EGR valve voltage feedback voltage low
33 EGR valve voltage low
in addition to 61, 74 & 73
I did dissconnect the EGR valve when the engine was running but didnt get the code at the time, cant remember if i restarted the paperclip test afterwards though.
EMl is still coming on after a few miles aswell Grrrrrr
Definatly NO 19 crank sensor in there now (there was before)
Thanks for the help so far and hope im not a pain.
