Title: Excessively Jerky Kickdown
Post by: Field Marshal Dr. Opti on 27 August 2008, 17:10:50
The chap/friend I sold my 3.2 plod to a couple of months ago, is having a bit of trouble with the kickdown.

I've given him OOF details, but he asked me to ask you in the meantime.

The auto gearbox does seem to have a problem. It changes up through the gears beautifully, whether using full throttle or part throttle - makes no difference.

It also changes down beautifully when coming to a stop at traffic lights etc. It will kick down into 1st gear without excessive jerking, it will also kick down from 4th to 3rd gear without excessive jerking, but when it changes from 4th to 2nd (in the 50 - 70 mile an hour region) it is accompanied by a delay and a massive jerk as the gearbox kicks down, which is disconcerting and extremely noticeable. This is a speed used regularly for overtaking.

The car seems to have this problem most, the more it is driven. In the first 5 miles or so it does not seem to do it as often, but, the longer the journey the more it happens.

Any ideas please? :-?

Before using too much - faults with these and left untouched often wreck the box completely - do a full atf change.  Also, check condition of atf you remove, and also the state of the magnet in the larger sump.

there is a guide in maintenance section re gearbox oil level. But service every 60k, re guardless of what vx might say. 2 sump gaskits and change or clean the filter. Clean magnet. 5 or 6 bottles of atf dexron 3 only, but this is becoming hard to get from vx. Very messy job, easier on a ramp. See the guide for filling procedure.

Checking ATF Level and condition is the first step.

Deffo, ATF and filter change.... First....  I bet it'll cure it...  drive steadily until then :y
