Hi, once again its time for the anual service & my 2.5 auto CDX has done 85,000 miles now and i would like to change the transmission fluid, 1. What is the best brand and type of oil to use? 2. Is the manual right when it says finally top up with the engine running? 3. How much oil will be needed to refill after removing/refitting both sumps?
Your opinions on this would be a great help.
Mike :)

I would be interested in others answer to 1. Last time I used the Comma stuff from Halfords, but I think there is better around.
2. Yes absolutely - you will get another 2 litres (my experience anyway) with the engine running as the fluid is circulating through the box. You also need to manually cycle the selector through the 3/2/1 positions.
3. Mine took just under 7 litres. Worth getting a bit more though as would be stupid to run out. (Halfords took my unopened one back)

I used Fuch Titan 4000 avaiilable from Opie Oils, and remember if you sign up as an OOF member, you get a little discount. 2x 5l cans is more than enough.

You need 10L, yes check with the engine running.
I find one of those garden sprayer kits works well when refilling.

Although I bought 2 lots of 5litres of ATF I only managed to get one of 'em back in. :(

i dont mean be funny with you but your the wrong book
if you put 10 liter oil in omega gear box i give you my car key
some people in here know a lot and they nice but some ...
i did it on mine i only used 4.5L and it s full
we did it on 2.6 V6 and we put around 5 liter and it was full
(with engine running)
why you say 10 L than ?

You can never get all the ATF out (the Torque Convertor being the main problem), it is possible to flush the transmission cooler seperately.
-
I guess because it's usually cheaper to buy in 5l cans than by the litre - so buy 10l (2x5l). If you only buy 5, sods law says it'll need 6 or 7...just depends on how much decides to drain back out of the torque converter, i guess!

Omega automatic transmissions (AR25 or AR35) require 8.4 litres of Dexron 3 to fill the system from dry, but only 4.4 litres to fill after removing the main sump. So if you only use 4.4 litres the system will still have just under half of old fluid, ie half a job. To get 92.5% new fluid empty and then fill the main sump with new fluid three times, running the engine between fills :y

i did 6 litres when i did mine, i removed both sumps.
i was surprised when the thing kept gobbling it all up, but now it is it done it is a bit smoother....
actually it was 7k ago i did it....OMG that was only july!!

I can confirm that I used <6 litres to refill when I changed mine two weeks ago (both sumps) and drained less than 5. Extra was what ran out in the in topping up cold and then hot. I could not wait for Opie but discovered that GSF stock it (there is one in Nottingham) and 10 litres of Fuchs Titan 4000 (Dex III) cost me £44.06 inc VAT collected which is cheaper than Opies with the discount and delivery as far as I can see.

It will take around 7l in total, not inc spillage. Bearing in mind you want to recheck the levels a week or so later, it makes sense to buy 2 x 5l bottles.
-
Also a few more cupfuls can be got out by disconnecting oil cooler pipes at box (quick release) and holding a cycle pump on one, and blowing the oil in cooler out ;)
Tunnie and I used about 7 - 7.5l in my MV6, inc wastage. Will lose a bit more when I recheck level.
-
Sorry 93.75% new fluid out of 8.4 litres, approx 16 litres used in all.

^^ what he said.
I should have made it clearer that 2 x 5L bottles is cheapest way to go. I used 6/7 litres when i did the fluid on a Senny...
